Weezer (The Green Album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album was seen as a rebirth for Weezer, following a 5-year hiatus since their 1996 album, Pinkerton, which was initially a commercial failure, but later gained much popularity among both fans and critics.
The Green Album brought Weezer renewed critical and commercial success, with the singles "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" receiving heavy airplay and was on over thirty critics' "Best of 2001" lists [1].
The Green Album also was the band's first release without longtime bassist Matt Sharp, who would end up suing the band before the release of their fourth album, Maladroit, seeking compensation and songwriting credit for songs such as "Undone (The Sweater Song)," "El Scorcho" and "The Good Life".

EvilSponge: Album: Weezer (green album) by Weezer
This release (we'll just call it "the green album", both because that's the general convention among critics and because it's a practical way to discern this s/t release from 1994's s/t release) is clearly and distinctly a return to the Van Halen mode of things.
In fact, the similarities between this album and 1994's blue album are so readily apparent as to beg the question of self-reflexive irony, or at least self-reflexive identification.
In the end the green album feels kind of phoned in, as if Rivers and company were just fulfilling the contract, maximizing the royalties and moving on with it.

Green was at the peak of his popularity when he suddenly decided to join the ministry in the mid-'70s.
Green was born in Forest City, Arkansas, where he formed a gospel quartet, the Green Brothers, at the age of nine.
Released in early 1970, Green's debut album Green Is Blues showcased the signature sound he and Mitchell devised -- a sinewy, sexy groove highlighted by horn punctuations and string beds that let Green showcase his remarkable falsetto.

Green Day: American Idiot - PopMatters Music Review
To say that this is a creative renaissance for the group would be a gross understatement: the fact is that with this album Green Day have finally cemented their position as one of the best rock outfits of their generation.
Concept albums as a whole are tricky business, and when you take the final step dividing concept from narrative, you are entering hoary pastures.
Although Green Day have always been an impressive live band, they have now evolved into something else entirely, tackling these dizzyingly complex movements with the exact same level of reckless enthusiasm with which they have always tackled their hardest and most unforgiving punk tracks.

What Green is able to fashion out of it is an intimacy that's hushed but not quiet, knowing but not private.
Green's cover of "Pretty Woman" draws on the innate funk sunken into Orbison's original, turning the classic rocker into a slinky, soulful groover.
Oddly, I never listen to the album very much these days and to some extent, I take it for granted that Green will always be there when I need him to be.

And with this album, Green is coming full circle, embracing his world inside and outside the church.

Unlike Jobson's second entirely solo album, quiet and dark, absolutely instrumental "Themes of secret" (1985), most compositions from "The Green Album" are provided with his vocals.
This is a highly obscure, but exceptionally good album from the "dark ages" of the prog of the 80's.
Stylistically "The Green Album" is outstanding, it has no parallels at all, even with U.K. On the whole, this work shows quiet accesible Classic Prog, typical for that time, and that stylistics may be called, for example, high-quality "pre-Neo".

Though the album didn't quite succeed at that, it has gone on to sell 10 million copies around the world, and earned Green Day a Grammy and a sweep of the MTV Video Music Awards.
By 1990, Armstrong, Dirnt and Tre had coalesced into Green Day (named in honor of a daylong weed binge) and were one of the biggest draws at the Gilman, pulling in crowds of fans for their punky three-chord rave-ups about life as latchkey teenage potheads.
Green Day signed to Reprise, and in February 1994, they released their major-label debut, Dookie, which made them, in their early twenties, instant stars and MTV staples, selling 8 million copies in the United States.

The Green Album, recorded nearly five years after their previous album, the widely ignored (but wholly excellent) Pinkerton, sees the band reunited with former Cars frontman Rik Ocasek, who produced their multi-platinum debut way back in 1994.
Instead, they have produced an album which is only half-decent, full of pop-rock that is frankly forgettable, lacking in both the musical and emotional substance that we know they are capapble of producing.
Weezer are a great band, and this is a good album, with some of the songs having pithy lyrics and good licks, but it doesn't inspire love like their earlier work.

Green's first new album in six years, 5, is an underproduced but encouraging collection improved by Tomasek's emergence as the band's second strong songwriter; the chorus of his "Thinking" — a blunt '70s rock funk breakup throwback — is especially impressive.
Green deftly dashes off a disguised cover of the Bee Gees' "Holiday" (as "Photograph") and titles a crazed arena-leaning Bolanesque boogie "Seize the Means of Production." (The sound of "Heavy Metal Dreams" is, disappointingly, cat-screechingly literal.) On "Tuesday," Lescher sings the jacked-up romance rock with a frenzied edge that threatens to upend the lyrics.
Like an echo of the Gram Parsons album, Lescher sings the shit out of a stirring and gorgeous minor-key original, "Memories." Even the two punky singalongs are mixed within safe sonic borders and owe more to the Move than Motörhead.

Weezer : Weezer (Green Album) - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Once its second album, Pinkerton, stiffed on the charts and was lambasted in the press (including an devastatingly unfair pan from Rolling Stone, who named it the worst album of 1996), the group dropped out of sight and leader Rivers Cuomo went into seclusion.
Weezer eventually realized this through the magic of the Internet (plus an uproarious Japanese tour), and hit the road in 2000, knocking out a new album at the end of the year, when the band realized that there were thousands of fans eager to hear a new record.
The fact that this Weezer sounds as fresh as the first is as much a testament to the band's talents as the musical stagnation of the post-grunge, post-Britpop '90s, but three albums out, Weezer has yet to deliver a record that isn't immensely satisfying.
