In the town the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.0% who were 65 years of age or older.

It is nearly surrounded by marsh, the Grand River on the south and Puckaway on the west and north, a narrow strip of land connecting it with the town of Dayton on the east; the dry land in town is six miles east and west and two miles north and south.
Dayton Township was subsequently absorbed by the towns of Green Lake and Marquette, the eastern two and a half sections running north-south becoming part of Green Lake and the western three and a half sections part of Marquette.

When the Green Bay and Lake Pepin Railroad planned to build their road through Jackson County, L.G. Merrill donated many acres of land to the company so they would change their plans from connecting with the West Wisconsin at Wright's to connecting with that railroad in Merrillan.
H.Weldon McGee, president of the Green Bay and Western in 1970 states, 'The original freight depot was built by the GBandM RR in 1884 and was rebuilt by the Omaha at joint expense by both carriers in 1885 after the original had burned.
By the time the Green Bay and Lake Pepin RR construction crews reached Merrillan in January 1873, the west Wisconsin town was already linked to the Saint Paul grain markets by the West Wisconsin Railroad.

The Packers, named for Green Bay's cheese packers and manufacturing workers, almost went bankrupt in the 1920s, until the community stepped in and reorganized the franchise into a non-profit entity -- selling shares in the team to the community.
For over 70 years, the team has been the only major sports franchise to be owned by the community in which it is based, and since 1960 NFL rules have prohibited public ownership of football franchises.
