Taiwan's Green Party was formally established January 25, 1996, not long before the March 1996 presidential and legislative elections.
As part of this effort, the Green Party of Taiwan's program includes "political waste recycling," under which its elected representatives are to donate 80 percent of their salary to movements for social justice and ecological sustainability.
Although the Green Party's membership is small and its resources are few, a number of its ideals have strong support in Taiwan's society, such as environmental conservation and opposition to nuclear power.

The politics of Taiwan is often depicted as a contest between the Pan-Green Coalition and the Pan-Blue Coalition.
These parties can be divided into "blue" factions (Pan-Blue Coalition) and "green" factions (Pan-Green Coalition), with the "blue" faction tending toward unification and a national identity that is linked with China and the "green" faction leaning toward a national identity based on Taiwan independence which is separate from the Chinese national identity.
The complex structure of the party system in the ROC is also influenced by the voting system which uses single non-transferable vote for legislative elections and first past the post for executive elections.

For much of the 1990s the parties which later form the Pan-Green Coalition greatly benefitted from the perception that they were less corrupt than the ruling Kuomintang.

The Green Party of England and Wales has been targeted by a vicious email campaign, believed to be related to the opposition of a proposed Wal-mart supermarket in Sheffield.
The Party believe that their campaign against the building of a Wal-mart store on land owned by Sheffield Wednesday FC is the root of the problem, and the emails are from a minority of Wednesday supporters unhappy with the protest.
