GREEN PARTY : Encyclopedia Entry   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
Green Parties are part of, but do not exclusively represent, a larger political movement to reform human governance to better fit the constraints of the biosphere — usually called the Green movement to contrast it from the electoral participation of the legally-registered Parties.
Many people also confuse Green Parties with Greenpeace, a global NGO prominent in the ecology movement, which like the Green political movement was founded in the 1970s, and shares some green goals and values, but works with different methods and is not organized as a political party.
Green Parties are often formed in a given jurisdiction by a coalition of scientific ecologists, community environmentalists, and local (or national) leftist groups or groups concerned with peace or citizens rights.

Green MPs were first elected as part of the Alliance in 1996, but the party subsequently split away and stood candidates under their own banner.

In March 1972 the world's very first Green party (the United Tasmania Group) was formed at a public meeting in Hobart; in May 1972 a meeting at Victoria University, Wellington, launched the Values Party, the world's first national Green party.
This was a comprehensive statement of Green politics which was widely distributed overseas and contributed to the development of Green parties elsewhere.
These principles have been translated into many languages in the succeeding years, and were the inspiration for the Green Charter formulated by the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand at its foundational conference in March 1990 (see Appendix A).

Now, the country's once-obscure Green Party is leading a campaign to extend a national moratorium on the commercial use of genetically modified food, scheduled to expire in October.
For the Greens, however, and the party's thousands of supporters in this island nation of 3.9 million, not enough is known about the potential effects of genetic engineering to justify the government opposition to a moratorium on any commercial use of genetically engineered crops.
Declaring it a "nonnegotiable" political stance, the Green Party waged its recent electoral campaign by vowing to use its parliamentary numbers to bring down any government that backed field trials of any genetically modified crops, such as potatoes, a favorite among scientists currently doing their genetic engineering work behind closed laboratory doors.
