This is why the western greens have been more or less left-wing politicians as from their origins, while the eastern greens started as a nationalistic and conservative movement, struggling for national independence as a necessary precondition for the democratic implementation of green ideas.
This historical difference meant that a range of the western green ideas were only applicable in a free society since they were quite opposite to those of the eastern greens – not in terms of the overall goal, but of the ways to reach it.
I was elected the co-chairman of the Green Party in 1997, and the lack of close links with the western partners was one of the first topics I paid attention to.

In May 1990, the 1922 Constitution of the Republic of Latvia (Satversme) was restored and became the official Constitution of the newly independent Latvian state.
As to public participation norms in the environmental laws in Latvia, there are laws that include public participation directly, such as the EIA Law, the Law on Environmental Protection, the Regulations for Territorial Planning and the Law on Building.
For instance in the regions of Latvia, there are often cases of illegal tree felling, fishing and hunting, and there are cases in which witnesses inform the environmental protection inspector about the violation.

The defeat of Assemblymember Sylvia Friedman by Brian Kavanagh in Tuesday's Democratic Party primary may be the harbinger of hard times to come for the Lower East Side, left-leaning democratic club CODA (Coalition for a Democratic Alternative) which backed Friedman.
In Tompkins Square Park, there is a garden I walk by now and again named for Sandra Turner (whom I met working in Bella Abzug's first campaign.) Sandy, who died a few years ago, was a smart, effective campaign strategist whose feminism and left politics never led here to hate her opponents.
Thinking about her, I was comparing the bile and smear of the Mark Green campaign, the Diamondstone/Conner exchanges and the gleefull sneers at competing candidates in the 11th CD with the spirited but not-appallingly-spiteful competition in the 19th Congressional District.
