 Green Spring
Green Spring allows a unique opportunity to interpret Berkeley's influence on the development of Virginia and America from 1642-1677, the evolution of the plantation system, the expanse of agricultural and industrial experimentation, and the political discord with the emergence of Bacon's Rebellion in 1676-1677 that resulted in the burning of Jamestown, the capital.
Green Spring is the 17th century plantation of Virginia's colonial governor, Sir William Berkeley.
Working with our partners, Friends of the National Park Service for Green Spring, Inc. and James City County, Colonial National Historical Park is moving forward in protecting, researching, preserving and interpreting this valuable resource.

 Alder
Once established, the Alder is not easily rooted out of the ground again, which is the reason why foresters used to seldom mixed it with other trees in a plantation in the past, but reserved it often for damp waste grounds, which would be costly to prepare for the planting of other crops.
Alder is also associated with the energy of Aries and Mars and the strengthening power of the Sun in the spring, its journey throughout the summer and then its waning power.
In the past Alder used to be grown extensively in coppices, which means that the wood is harvested every 6 -12 years in the winter, which leaves the bole to produce new growth in the spring.

Berkeley Plantation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is believed that Berkeley Plantation was named in honor of one of Colonial Virginia's more popular 17th century royal governors, Sir William Berkeley (1605-1677) (although his own plantation in nearby James City County was named Green Spring).
His son, Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the American Declaration of Independence and a governor of Virginia, was born at Berkeley Plantation, as was his son William Henry Harrison, a war hero in the Battle of Tippecanoe, governor of Indiana Territory, and ninth President of the United States.
Berkeley Plantation, one of the first great estates in America, comprises about 100 acres (0.4 km²) on the banks of the James River on Virginia State Highway 5 in Charles City County, Virginia.

Green Spring Plantation in James City County about five miles (8 km) west of Williamsburg, was the 17th century plantation of one of Colonial Virginia's more popular governors, Sir William Berkeley (1605 to 1677) and his second wife, Frances (née Culpeper) Stephens Berkeley, whom he wed in 1670.
It is believed by many historians that the well-known Berkeley Plantation in nearby Charles City County was named in his honor, as were Berkeley County and Berkeley Springs, both of which are now located in West Virginia.

 The Story of Bacon's Rebellion
By the middle of January of the new year the whole colony had been reduced to submission, and upon January 22 Governor Berkeley went home to "Green Spring," and issued a summons for an Assembly to meet at his own house-for since the destruction of Jamestown the colony was without a legislative hall.
Before leaving "Middle Plantation" the Rebel issued a summons, in the name of the King, and signed by four members of his Majesty's Council, for a meeting of the Grand Assembly, to be held upon September 4, to manage the affairs of the colony in his absence.
This plantation afterward became famous in Virginia as one of the seats of the Randolph family.

HEROES AND RENEGADES: THE ARIZONA BRIGADE, CSA, Col. Sherod Hunter Camp 1525, SCV, Phoenix, Arizona
Battles in which the First Regiment was involved were the Camden Expedition (March-May 1864), the Battle of Poison Spring (April 18, 1864), the Battle of Massard’s Prairie (July 27, 1864), and the Battle of Cabin Creek (September 19, 1864).
The fact that the looters in the Poison Spring case were negroes may have contributed to the ferocity of the reaction by the Confederate troops upon discovering the contents of the captured Union wagons.
Battles in which the Second Regiment was involved included Brashear City (June 23, 1863), Cox’s Plantation (July 12-13, 1863), and the many battles and skirmishes of the Red River Campaign of March-May 1864, including the major battles at Mansfield (April 8, 1864) and Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864).

The Single Transferable Vote (STV) is a preferential voting system designed to minimise wasted votes and provide proportional representation in multi-candidate elections while ensuring that votes are explicitly for candidates rather than party lists.
