The neon tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is a freshwater fish of the characin family (family Characidae) of order Characiformes.
Neon tetras are considered easy to keep in a community aquarium of at least 10 gallons, with a pH of 5.0–7.0 and KH of 1.0–2.0.
Neon tetras are omnivores and will accept most flake foods, but should also have some small foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and micro pellet food to supplement their diet.

DISEASE Neon tetra disease - caused by the microsporidian parasite Pleistophora.
Neon tetras probably head the list, since they are often purchased at a very small size, stick out like a sore thumb, have that nice, easy-to-swallow torpedo shape, aren't particularly quick, and sleep absolutely still at the bottom of the tank.
The amazing aspect of this is that at one time wild guppies, neon tetras, and convict cichlids were as exciting to aquarists as the golden Sailfin goodeid, the dwarf neon rainbowfish, and Rift Lake cichlids are today.

I keep Black Neons in my somewhat generic "Amazon" aquarium, even though they aren't fishes of the Amazon Basin; in fact, Black Neons come from the Mato Grosso, far to the south in Brazil, in the Rio Taquari, which is part of the Paraguay drainage.
