  The Greenback Question
The value of the greenbacks, which were printed with green ink on one side, fluctuated with the war's progress.
In early 1864, when Union prospects were dim, the greenback dollar held a value of under 40 cents; by the end of the war in 1865, it was around 67 cents.
The original intention was for the greenbacks to hold the same value as regular gold-backed notes, but that result never occurred.

The decline of the greenback is attributed to habitat loss, modification, water diversion, water pollution, sedimentation, and the introduction of nonnative fish.
However, the major factor in the decline of the greenback cutthroat trout was the introduction of nonnative salmonid species (rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, and Yellowstone cutthroat trout), within the South Platte and Arkansas River drainages.
Greenback cutthroat trout readily hybridize with rainbow trout and other subspecies of cutthroat, and are outcompeted by brook and brown trout.

 The Greenback’s long downward spiral
“Greenback liquidation comes amid growing concerns that global central banks and Middle East oil funds are quietly paring back their holdings of US bonds.
Almost half of all greenbacks are now located outside the country, which means that if the dollar becomes less attractive to investors those greenbacks will come flooding back to America and plunge the country into recession.
In practical terms, we are a “Dollar system” and the greenback must continue to dominate the world oil trade or the Federal Reserve, the IMF, the World Bank and all the privately owned global institutions will crash and burn.

Colorado native greenback cutthroat trout may actually benefit from increased temperatures attributed to global warming, according to recent research findings at Colorado State University.

 Handbook of Texas Online:
The Greenback movement was a part of the agrarian unrest of the last quarter of the nineteenth century.
Other planks of the platform provided that tariffs should be levied for revenue only and demanded the repeal of the "smokehouse" tax law, the convict labor law, the abolition of useless offices, a decrease in public salaries, the establishment of a tax-supported school system, and the curbing of the power of the railroads.
Despite their defeat, the Greenbackers popularized a number of reform issues that gained national attention at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries.

There is still a severe shortage of good low- elevation habitat available for the fish to grow to large sizes, and a critical need for private-sector pond-owners to step forward (the fish are free if you'll protect them).

US walks a fine line as greenback slides - Malcolm Maiden - www.smh.com.au
The Treasurer said the greenback's decline was also hitting Australian exporters - but the damage was not as bad here as it could be.
Australian mining companies are booking less $A income on their exports because of a three-year, 50 per cent-plus climb in the Australian dollar's value against the fading greenback, but the losses are often being outweighed by higher $US prices for commodities as China's infrastructure building boom continues to supercharge demand.
The greenback's decline is weighing on other parts of the economy, however, and making a rise in interest rates less likely.
