Greenbelt was a planned community, noted for its interior walkways, underpasses, its system of inner courtyards and one of the first mall-type shopping centers in the United States.
Greenbelt is one of three greenbelt towns envisioned by Rexford Guy Tugwell, friend and advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and created under the Resettlement Administration in 1935 under authority of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act.
In fact, Greenbelters were so busy attending meetings that the town council called a moratorium on meetings between Christmas and New Year’s in 1939 to permit residents to spend time at home with their families.

A Greenbelt and Pathways Committee was appointed in 1969 to guide the City of Boise as it worked to develop the Greenbelt, and in 1971 the first Greenbelt Ordinance was adopted which required a minimum setback of 70 feet for all structures and parking areas.
Today, the Greenbelt is funded through the Boise City general fund, as well as various state and federal grants.
All Greenbelt users should stay to the right and use caution under bridges and at blind corners where vision could be impaired.

The Greenbelt Act, 2005 enables the creation of a Greenbelt Plan to protect about 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the Golden Horseshoe from urban development and sprawl.
The light green areas are the Greenbelt; the brown areas represent Towns and Villages within the Protected Countryside, and the grey areas represent settlement areas outside the Greenbelt.

The home site of a greenbelt tract is not valued from the use value schedule but is instead valued from home site values which have been assigned to other surrounding tracts that are indicative of home site values for that area.
The assessor is required to calculate both use and market value, as well as the taxes based on both of these values for each year that the property is in greenbelt, presumably to facilitate any rollback assessment which may be due later.

 Greenbelt Passes First Report Card
The report, Greenbelt Report Card: Grading implementation and progress in Year 1, grades the provincial government in five key areas: protecting the Top 10 Greenbelt Hotspots ("B-"); dealing with challenges from municipalities ("Incomplete"); making the Greenbelt 'greener'("B+"); expanding and building highways ("D"); and, ensuring adequate resources ("A").
Of the Top 10 Greenbelt Hotspots, first identified by the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance in April 2004, six receive a passing grade, two get a failing one and two are graded "Incomplete".

 MAH - Protecting the Greenbelt: Greenbelt Act, 2005
The Greenbelt Act, 2005 enables the creation of a Greenbelt Plan to protect about 1.8 million acres of environmentally sensitive and agricultural land in the Golden Horseshoe from urban development and sprawl.  It includes and builds on about 800,000 acres of land within the Niagara Escarpment Plan and the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan.
It sets out the main elements and objectives for the Greenbelt, which are addressed in the Plan.  It also requires planning decisions to conform to the Greenbelt Plan.
Pursuant to the Greenbelt Act, 2005, the Greenbelt Council was appointed by the minister in June 2005.  The council will provide advice on the administration of the Greenbelt and will guide the government on such matters as the implementation of the Greenbelt Plan, performance measures and the 10-year review of the plan.

The St. Mark's Greenbelt buffers Capitol Hill from I-5 and provides precious wildlife habitat, dense vegetation and trails.
