Greenbelt was settled in 1937 as a public cooperative community ("an experiment in American socialism") in the New Deal Era.
Greenbelt, which provided affordable housing for federal government workers, was one of three "green" towns planned in 1935 by Rexford Guy Tugwell, head of the United States Resettlement Administration, under authority of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act.
The Greenbelt Road is a long stretch of highway connecting towns, with links to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and to the nation's capital.

Greenbelt Park is not a place for hard-core hiking and backpacking, and should not be approached in that light.

Greenbelt was a planned community, noted for its interior walkways, underpasses, its system of inner courtyards and one of the first mall-type shopping centers in the United States.
Greenbelt is one of three greenbelt towns envisioned by Rexford Guy Tugwell, friend and advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and created under the Resettlement Administration in 1935 under authority of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act.
In fact, Greenbelters were so busy attending meetings that the town council called a moratorium on meetings between Christmas and New Year’s in 1939 to permit residents to spend time at home with their families.

MARYLAND UTILITY OFFICIAL AND CONTRACTOR PLEAD GUILTY TO -- A former official from the Laurel, Maryland-based Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and a contractor who worked under his supervision pleaded guilty today to separate charges of wire fraud in connection with a kickback scheme, the Department of Justice announced.
Joseph R. Jackson, a former supervisor in the WSSC’s Information Technology Section, and Arvind K. Agarwal, a contract computer consultant, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt, Maryland to the wire fraud charges which were filed March 8 and made public at today’s plea hearings.
According to the charges, Jackson and Agarwal schemed to defraud the WSSC by circumventing the competitive contracting process in Agarwal’s favor and inflating invoices submitted by Agarwal between November 1999 and October 2001.

GREENBELT, Maryland (CNN) -- Five men accused of arson in a December spree that damaged or destroyed more than 40 homes in the Washington suburbs were indicted Monday on federal charges, prosecutors said.
U.S. Attorney Allen Loucks announced the arson and conspiracy indictments against the men, all of whom are acquainted with one another as part of an informal group of road racers.
The men admitted involvement to varying extent in statements that came during interviews with investigators, according to previous court filings by prosecutors.
