GOVERNOR Romney's approval to build the Greenbush commuter rail line is welcome recognition that the South Shore needs relief from the worst highway congestion in the Boston area.
The Greenbush line ought to have opened in 1997, along with the rest of the Old Colony system, which runs to Kingston and Lakeville.
Persistent opposition among some in the affected towns forced delays on Greenbush, so the final decision was left to Romney, who did not make it an issue in the 2002 campaign and has other transportation priorities.
