His parents came to Missouri in 1840, and his father shortly after took a high political rank, representing Greene county several times in the Legislature, being appointed receiver of the land office, at Springfield, and a colonel in the militia during the civil war.
Emery is the son of Amasa and Abigail (Dutton) Emery, and was born December 4, 1881, in Cheshire county, New Hampshire.
He was educated in the common schools of his county, and at the age of twenty-one, went to Logan county, Kentucky, and worked at the carpenter's trade until the fall of 1831, when he came to Greene county, Missouri, and settled one mile south of the James river.

Greene County, Missouri was established from non-county area in 1833 (attached to Crawford Co), and originally covered all of Southwest Missouri.
PAINE was married in Madison County, Ark., to Miss Almira HARP, a native of Warren County, Tenn., and the daughter of Hardy and Ruth A. HARP, the former dying in Tennessee and the latter in Arkansas.
Her father was one of the earliest settlers in Greene county and he owned an excellent farm here and spent the rest of his life on the home place, and there his wife died also.

A description of the anticipated building is in the County Court Record, Book A. In addition to the roof change, a brick partition wall order was later rescinded, and new orders pertaining to stairs were made.
This was one of the few three-story buildings in southwest Missouri; the design is unusual for Missouri courthouses of this period, but the architect is not known.
County offices moved into the new facilities in March 1912, although work continued until the building was completed in 1915.

The county itself, named for Revolutionary War hero, Nathanael Greene, was officially established on January 2, 1833.

The land denuded of its forest growth was to a greater extent than usual put under cultivation, so that even where the soil has been abandoned to a second growth of trees, the new forests are the better for the period of farming.
There are evidences that there were a number of residents of the County, principally Dutch, before the Revolution, but that disturbance also disturbed them, and there seems to have been a general exodus at that time.

Students from Southwest Missouri State University (SMSU) mapped and described sinkholes (33603 bytes) ranging in size from a few feet in diameter to thousands of feet in diameter for the twenty 7.5' quadrangle maps that cover Greene County, Missouri.
Soils data (34470 bytes) (1:24000 scale), originally produced by the Natural Resource Conservation Service, was scanned by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and provided to the USGS for attribution and incorporation into the data base.
Ken Thompson of SMSU provided geologic maps (26877 bytes) of the 20 quadrangles that were digitized by the USGS.
