Greene County was created by the first state legislature on 1819 Dec. 13, from part of the land ceded to the Federal government by the Choctaw Cession of 1816 Oct. 24.
Greene County is located in the west-central portion of the state, between the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers.
It is bordered by Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Hale, Marengo, and Sumter counties.

Albany County was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean.
Albany County was reduced in size in 1786 by the splitting off of Columbia County; again in 1791 by the splitting off of Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties and the transfer of the Town of Cambridge to Washington County.
In the county the population was spread out with 23.00% under the age of 18, 9.50% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.70% who were 65 years of age or older.

As the years passed and no literal heirs were left to directly inherit the land, other members of the Rinehart family petitioned the court, and the land was sub divided and sold several times.
In 1859 Greene County accepted an act authorizing the erection of a County Home for the Poor.
The Greene County Historical Society, incorporated since 1925, began to lease the building and grounds from the County in 1969, and after much needed repairs it opened as the Museum in May 1971.

It is said that Greene County made more leather in the few years before 1835 than was produced by all the rest of the State.
The land denuded of its forest growth was to a greater extent than usual put under cultivation, so that even where the soil has been abandoned to a second growth of trees, the new forests are the better for the period of farming.
There are evidences that there were a number of residents of the county, principally Dutch, before the Revolution, but that disturbance also disturbed them, and there seems to have been a general exodus at that time.
