Cumbernauld is a new town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, created in 1956 as a population overflow for Glasgow.
The supposed core of Cumbernauld remains the "Town Centre", all of which is essentially contained within one structure, segmented into "phases", the first of which was completed in 1967, the latest of which began construction in May 2003 for completion around September 2004.
Cumbernauld is twinned with the town of Bron, France.

Abronhill High School in Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, is among a number of schools which might be shut under a £150m refurbishment scheme.
However, it has emerged that the plans require 14 schools to be closed with the pupils being relocated to new or amalgamated schools.
The school, which has 580 pupils, is credited with putting Cumbernauld on the map after it was the location of the 1981 film starring John Gordon Sinclair, Clare Grogan and Dee Hepburn.

There was double the fun at Cumbernauld railway station yesterday (12.05.03) when a pair of local twin girls met staff from Strathclyde Passenger Transport giving out leaflets with a two for one ticket offer.
Five-year-old identical twins, Robyn and Alex Magowan from Greenfaulds met the distribution staff while they were handing out the two for one leaflets to launch the new Sunday rail service between Glasgow and Cumbernauld starting this Sunday (18 May 2003).

The General Medical Council ruled it was "not proved" Dr Julie Mallon had failed to correctly assess Owen Charleston was suffering from an acute and potentially life-threatening asthmatic attack when he visited her at Central Health Centre, Cumbernauld, on August 19, 2002.
Owen, of Greenfaulds, Cumbernauld, visited Dr Mallon's surgery twice that day, but died later in hospital of an acute asthma attack.
The GMC's Fitness to Practise panel ruled it was not proved Dr Mallon had failed to take the appropriate action of having Owen immediately admitted as an emergency to Yorkhill Hospital, Glasgow, after his first visit to her surgery.
