Staten Island’s economy has grown in recent years, in large part because it is insulated from the economic volatility experienced in other boroughs, State Comptroller Alan Hevesi said in a report released today that examines the state of economic development and the overall economy in Staten Island.
Staten Island’s economy is focused on the local market, with 28.7 percent of the borough’s jobs in the health services and social assistance sector and 18 percent in retail trade.
Hevesi noted, “Staten Island is benefiting from public and private sector investments throughout the borough, including the remediation and redevelopment of the Fresh Kills landfill and the transformation of the St. George waterfront into a dynamic entertainment destination.

The Dutch surrendered Staten Island to the English in 1664, who in turn made the final purchase of the Island in 1670 from the Indians.

Eighteen birds have tested positive for the virus and 56 mosquito pools have been identified in the borough, compared to 55 birds and 93 pools in 2002, according to statistics from the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Only one person -- a 72-year-old Greenridge man -- has contracted the mosquito-borne virus here so far this year, while five were hospitalized with West Nile last year.
So far this year, Staten Island has been sprayed with the pesticide Anvil six times to reduce the mosquito population, said Andrew Tucker, a spokesman for the Health Department.
