The effect of the mineralogical composition and pore geometry of sediments on the distribution as well as the flow of immiscible fluids are of importance when evaluating petroleum reservoirs.
Greensand containing the clay mineral glauconite is a complex reservoir rock type.
Greensand samples from different locations were investigated by means of core analysis, determining fluid saturations and flow properties.

The base of this series of deposits consists of a heavy deposit of gypseous clay and sands, which rest directly upon the fossiliferous Claiborne greensands and marls as represented in the Moseleys Ferry and Cedar creek sections, as well as on Campbell and Elm creeks in the southern portion of Robertson county.
These fossiliferous greensands form a belt having an approximate width of four miles in the northeastern portion, and from four to five miles in the area drained by the Little Brazos river, and constitute the lowest horizon represented in Brazos county.
The lowest fossiliferous greensands have a dip of 75 feet per mile, where measured at Moseley's Ferry on the Brazos river, and the lignitic deposits appear to have a general dip of about 50 feet per mile, but are very irregular.

The first objective is to perform a careful mineralogical and sedimentological study of iron-rich "greensand" clay deposits found in the Eocene Wilcox Formation in central and west central Mississippi.
This portion of the research has applicability to the mineral resource management and exploitation of the "greensands", and will be accomplished by sampling trips to known mines and other outcrops in the areas of interest.
The second objective of this research is to investigate the role nannobacteria in the formation of the "greensand" deposits.

SANDPIPER - LoveToKnow Article on SANDPIPER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
In some of the cherty sandstones of the Greensand the chalcedonic cement is much more abundant: these rocks also contain rounded grains of glauconite, to which they owe their green color.
Crystalline silica (quartz) is deposited interstitially in some sandstones, often in regular parallel crystalline growth on the original sand grains, and when there are cavities or fissures in the rock may show the development of regular crystalline facets.
In ferruginous sandstones the iron oxidas usually form only a thin pellicle coating each grain, but sometims, in the greensands, are more abundant, especially in concretionary masses or segregations.

South of Palestine the greensand marls are of similar character, although the undecomposed material, with many shells, is found in the Elkhart section below the upper indurated variety.
North of Palestine the same greensands occur for a distance of three miles, while on the west unaltered greensands with calcareous shells are found.
The soils resulting from the decomposition of these greensand marls, where they form the surface of the ground, are of red or brownish red or mulatto color, and are the most productive of all the soils of the region.except those of the river bottoms.

At Portrush, the Lower Lias is seen on the shore, crowded with ammonites, but silicified and metamorphosed by invading dolerite.
The next deposits, as the scarps are approached, are greensands of "Selbornian" age, succeeded by Cenomanian, and locally by Turonian, sands.
The Senonian series is represented by the White Limestone, a hardened chalk with flints, which is often glauconitic and conglomeratic at the base.

Olympus Microscopy Resource Center: Polarized Light Microscopy Gallery - Glauconite
Presence of the mineral is responsible for the widespread greensands that occur along the bottom of the oceans, as well as many of the rocks commonly known as greenstones.
Due to its distinctive color, glauconite has been exploited for many years as a pigment, and because of its high potassium content the mineral is also often utilized as a component in fertilizers.
The glauconite-rich greensands, on the other hand, are frequently used for water softeners.

 British Upper Cretaceous Stratigraphy
Upper Cretaceous rocks, primarily Chalk, cover a vast area of England forming the Downs and Wolds as well as the spectacular chalk cliffs from Flamborough Head to south-east Devon.
In south-east Devon and the Inner Hebrides of north-west Scotland, white chalk rests on greensands, calcareous sands and commercially important quartz sandstones.
Scientific knowledge of these rocks is an essential part of planning construction projects, developing and protecting groundwater resources and utilising the materials such as flint, chalk and sands for industrial processes.

Although glauconite concentrations may be found as impurities in limestones and marls, when they appear in high proportions they form greensands, a term coined after the green color of the mineral.

Glauconite occurs in small pellets and coatings in sandstones, giving them the name "greensands".
It has been suggested that the mineral forms in sedimentary environments which are rich in organic matter, possibly in the form of fecal material.

Mineral Nutrient Depletion in US Farm and Range Soils
Nutrients can be industrially concentrated or chemically altered from natural sources (industrial nitrogen fixation, acidulated phosphates, synthetic metal chelates, etc.); The rate of release is very rapid, and nutrient loss by leaching, runoff and subsequent pollution of the environment is possible if not managed tightly.
Nutrients can come from natural rocks and minerals (limestone, rock phosphate, greensands, etc).
Most need to be finely ground to speed the rate of release of nutrient elements.
