Topic: Greentrax Recordings

The Thistle & Shamrock Newsletter Article: Greentrax
Greentrax Recordings was launched, funded solely by Ian's police pension.
One of the aims of the Greentrax label was to help highly talented Scottish musicians and singers reach wider audiences, especially those who had not yet recorded.
Greentrax continues to release a high percentage of debut albums, and several have won awards, including the BBC Radio Scotland/Living Tradition Album of the Year, 1994.

 Scottish Traditions
Greentrax Recordings, in cooperation with the School of Scottish Studies, have re-released the first 15 recordings in the series on CD and cassette formats.
Both of these recordings were collected in the 50s and early 70s and contain mostly simulated waulking, as many of the participants were quite elderly and the actual art is almost never practiced anymore.
For this recording, the School of Scottish Studies chose to focus on the very highly ornamented singing style found on Lewis and by Lowland Scots who are descendants of Lewis folk.

 Various Artists, Gentle Giants
Scotland's Greentrax Records has for many years actively supported Scottish musicians and culture, well beyond what would be expected of a record label's promotion of its artists.
Robin Laing, well known inter alia for his recordings of songs about whisky (and his extensive knowledge of the beast), coordinated the work, and contributed an exhaustive and well researched fourteen-page introduction to the album, describing the history of the breed and its changing role as the industrial revolution reshaped Scotland's agricultural and industrial structures.
Greentrax's Gentle Giants is a good example, like many of their releases, of a production which not only reflects the culture it represents, but which also helps to shape the quality and direction of contemporary Scottish music.

Ancient Lothian - Music - Skene Manuscript
It belongs to a significant group of seventeenth-century lute manuscripts from various noble houses around Scotland, all of which constitute the earliest substantial body of transcriptions and arrangements of medieval Scottish secular music, and many of the tunes are still current within the folk tradition.
The member of the Skene family who is generally associated with its compilation is John Skene of Hallyards, but according to D. James Ross, we should associate it with William Skene of Hallyards.
Two other commercial recordings featuring material from the Skene Manuscript are by Ronn MacFarlane on the Dorian label and by Jakob Kindberg on the BIS label.

While STORM FORCE TEN should have marked a new beginning for the band with the return of Martin Carthy and the addition of accordionist John Kirkpatrick, 1977 more accurately could be regarded as the beginning of the end of Steeleye Span's first reign (10 albums in 8 years).
In addition to MacMaster's extremely fluid and precise technique and her devotion to the traditional Cape Breton fiddle tunes there are a few surprises here; most notably the bluegrass and erstwhile Texas swing favorite, "Beaumont Rag," performed in true swing fashion.

Articulate is another way of looking at the band’s overall presentation in as much that Ciaran comes across as a young John Denver in his approach to singing whilst Fiona (and I still can’t believe she was only 14 when she recorded this album) has the maturity of one born for great things.
