Greenwich was linked by a massive brick-built railway viaduct with 878 arches, first to a station in Spa Road (Bermondsey), and later to London Bridge.
Greenwich's handsome station building was designed by George Smith in 1840, making it one of the oldest original station buildings in the world.

North Greenwich tube station on the Jubilee Line opened in time for the Millennium celebrations at the end of 1999 - it is adjacent to the Millennium Dome at the northern end of an area sometimes referred to as the Greenwich peninsula.
It is not in the area historically known as North Greenwich, which was on the Isle of Dogs, north of the river.
Planning for the Dome meant that the station was designed to cope with the millions of visitors expected there during 2000.
