Texas claimed the land south of the North Fork and the United States claimed the land north of the South Fork (later called the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River).
The Greer County Homestead Law, passed just afterwards, gave the Texas settlers the 160 acres (647,000 m²) they were living on and the option to purchase an additional 160 acres (647,000 m²) for $1.00 per acre ($247/km²).
With Oklahoma statehood, old Greer County was divided into Greer, Harmon, Jackson, and part of Beckham counties.

Greer County was for many years the grazing ground of the great buffalo herds and the hunting ground for the Plains Indians, especially the Wichitas, Comanches and Kiowas, who lived on the western prairies and believed this to be their land.
It was claimed by Texas that the United States had in many ways recognized the claim of Texas to Greer County, and that upon principles of justice and equity, should not question the title of the state to the territory.
Texas contended that the North Fork of the Red River is the Red River of Natchitoches mentioned in the treaty of 1819.

In July 1886 the settlers of Greer County met at Mobeetie and organized Greer County on the authority of the act of 1860.
Texas held that the 100th meridian of the Melish map was the boundary intended by the framers of the treaty and that the North Fork was the main Red River and therefore the boundary.
Greer County thus became a territory of the United States and, in 1906, part of Oklahoma.

People refused to pay taxes; the Army moved to evict homesteaders who believed they lived in Texas (having bought their land from Texas), but the United States maintained were on public land; criminals questioned the right of Texas courts to try them.
When in 1890 the United States sued Texas for possession of Greer County, the precedents for Texas' claim were outdated, ill-defined maps.

Greer county is located in southwestern Oklahoma with Mangum serving as the county seat.
In 1886, after border disputes with Texas, a full slate of officers was installed but it wasn't until 1896 that the county was finally separated from the Lone Star state by order of the United States Supreme Court.

"Old Greer County Pioneers" was chosen as the name of the organization of the early settlers of Greer County, Texas, when they met in their first reunion at Hollis, July 26, 1933.
To be eligible for membership one must have been a resident of the strip of territory known as Greer County, Texas before 1896, the date of the Supreme Court decision that settled the boundary dispute between Texas and the United States and which declared this strip to be a part of Oklahoma Territory.
Invitations for 1934 meeting places were given by Mangum, county seat of the present Greer County, and capital of Old Greer and by Altus.

The state of Texas cedes to the United States all her claim to territory exterior to the limits and boundaries which she agrees to establish by the first article of this agreement.
This view rests upon the official acts of the general government and of Texas, and requires that the present controversy shall be determined upon the basis that the line, which by the treaty was to follow 'the course of the Rio Roxo westward,' extends to the true 100th meridian, thence by a line due north.
By the act creating Lipscomb county, its boundary immediately south of the parallel of 36 30' north latitude begins 'at a monument on the intersection of the 100th meridian and the thirty-six and a half degrees of latitude.' That monument is the one established by the United States after the settlement of 1850.

He was born in Titus county, Texas, January 4, 1850, son of Henry and Lennie (Smith) Evans, natives respectively of Kentucky and Missouri, who came to Texas in early life and were married here.
In 1850 he moved from Kentucky to Texas and settled in Titus county, on lands which he bought and improved, and where he became a prominent and influential citizen, and passed the rest of his life and died.
She was a daughter of A. Smith, one of the early settlers of Texas, who at one time owned a portion of the land on which Dallas now stands, which he sold for a trifle and afterward moved to Titus county.

 Opening Of The West - Oklahoma Indian Territory
Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties (formerly counties "A" and "B") date their beginning from the Land Run of September 22, 1891, which opened to public settlement three Indian reservations adjoining the former Unassigned Lands on the east.
Two new counties were carved from the area and were designated "A" and "B" with county seat townsites selected by government officials in the exact geographical center of each.
At the Constitutional Convention 1907, the area was divided among Beckham County, Jackson County, and Greer County.

When Texas was an administrative unit of Mexico, the southern border was not the Rio Grande at all but the Nueces River (as is illustrated on an 1835 map reprinted in Meinig's 2nd volume).
When Texas settlers expanded into this area, they naturally chose the northernmost fork of the river as the boundary, establishing Greer County in the region between the northern fork, the main fork, and the 100th meridian.
Greer County was dissolved, and the land later became part of Oklahoma.
