Greg Lake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greg Lake (born November 10, 1947 in Dorset, England) is a British bassist, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer.
Lake was a founding member of the original incarnation of the British group King Crimson, and was an eponymous member of the supergroup Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

 CMT.com : Greg Lake : Biography
Lake learned to read music and also to play pieces by Paganini, among other classical composers, but his aspirations lay with emulating the sound of his favorite band of the era, Cliff Richard & The Shadows, and their lead guitarist, Hank B. Marvin.
That first line-up of the band only lasted a year--by December of 1969, Giles and McDonald were tired of touring and opted out, and Lake refused to continue working with the group, although he stayed around long enough to sing on their second album, In the Wake of Poseidon (1970).
Lake's production experience as a member of King Crimson (who had produced their own debut album) also served ELP in good stead, and his songwriting became the creative nucleus for the group's first three studio albums.

 Greg Lake Profile
As he did in the mid 1980s, Greg Lake is actively returning to a solo career, which he will balance between a myriad of projects and the occasional ELP re-groupings.
Greg Lake has also begun work on his first non-ELP album since 1983's Manoeuvers, and with his returning to the recording studio to produce - both himself and other acts - since record production is something he has done on all of his own musical projects.
Greg Lake used this period to launch an acclaimed solo career that included two powerful albums (Greg Lake and Manoeuvers, both released on Chrysalis Records) and featured collaborations with such icons as Bob Dylan, Clarence Clemmons, and the members of Toto.

Accessory-free, Lake functions as the balancing beam between the spontaneous shuffling of Emerson and Palmer.
Curiously, Lake has produced a majority of ELP's albums, which proves his ear and vision are central to the band's overall sound.
Greg Lake treated the audience to an inspiring rendition of "From the Beginning," while Keith Emerson demonstrated his placid ability to tickle the ivories on "Creole Dance" and "Honky Tonk Train." Carl Palmer exhibited extraordinary precision and dexterity, especially in lieu of his returning to an all-acoustic set.

Greg Lake is a vocalist and bass guitarist of great ability.
With King Crimson, Lake played at the The Rolling Stones’ Hyde Park, free concert on 5 July 1969, and the high profile of this occasion guaranteed the band almost overnight fame.
Lake resurfaced around Christmas time 1975 when he released what was to become one of the most perennially-popular Christmas singles with I Believe In Father Christmas (co-written with King Crimson/ELP lyricist Pete Sinfield)—the song carried on the ELP tradition of including a passage of popular classical music with Prokofiev's Sleigh Bell Ride.

Then, in a perfect example of one extreme to the other, everyone but Greg Lake, Howard Jones and Sheila E. left the stage for an interesting attempt at Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Karn Evil 9." You have to give them credit for trying, but the ELP fans in the audience were probably disappointed.
Lake's vocals aren't what they used to be either; but as long as he's within his range, he's fine.

Lake was a good enough bassist and guitarist to keep up with Emerson and Palmer, but his strength was singing ballads such as "Lucky Man" from their self-titled debut album, "From the Beginning" from Trilogy, and "Still You Turn Me On" from Brain Salad Surgery.
Greg lake was interested in the idea, but Carl Palmer was still under contract to Asia and was unable to participate.
Now, the band refused to use the melancholically meditative shades that were present here and there on their debut album, but concentrated on the further development of their unique style.
