LeMond later asserted in an interview that the team management and his coach Paul Koechli had lied to him during a crucial stage, telling him that Hinault was close behind him when in fact Hinault lagged LeMond by over three minutes.
LeMond rode the time trial using then-novel aero bars, which gave him a significant aerodynamic advantage, to beat Fignon by 58 seconds to claim his second yellow jersey with a final victory margin of 8 seconds – the closest in the Tour's history.

I respect Greg for voicing his opinion, but when an opinion is unfounded and voiced by a man of such reknown, it can be particularly damaging.
What is most significant about Greg Lemond's interview with Le Monde is his references to the increased speed in the peloton and his experiences in the 1991 TDF.
LeMond couldn't figure out in his first tour win that Hinault wasn't going to just hand him victory, he was going to have to earn it as a true champion.

Lemond won it three times (which is a MAJOR accomplishment mind you), but missed two of what could have been great seasons recovering from a wound from a hunting accident.
Greg, five, six, or seven tour wins would have made you a bigger legend then you are today, but it would have never made you the greatest and it would not have made you happy as you have never seemed happy with your accomplishments and more accomplishments would have solved that inner issue.
Lemond has nothing to be ashamed of, and he did have some tough breaks, but that is life.

Bernard had won four TdF titles when in the 1985 tour an American Greg Lemond was leading the tour on his way to being the first American to wear the Yellow Jersey but was told by his team director that he had to slow down and let his teammate Bernard catch up.
Greg disappointed but being the team player that he was did in fact slow down relinquishing the lead for Hinault, which Hinault eventually won giving him his 5th TdF.
Well look closely, in the early and late 80's sure Greg had a team and was the captain of the teams that he did ride for but not only did he have to worry about the other riders in the peleton he had to also worry about his own teammates.
