On my first listen through, I didn't catch on to "Wreck", but now I think it's one of the better songs on the album-- its plodding gloom has much more to it than may first grab the attention and is one of the more emotionally touching songs on "Host".
Mackintosh also offers some excellent uptempo numbers in "Ordinary Days" and "Year of Summer".
These in particular stand out as examples of PL music that is not only well done without the old guitar reliance, but can sustain a fast pace without sacrificing the moody despair of the music.

 Paradise Lost
Incorporating elements of gothic and pop music, as well as the recent introduction of electronics to the mix, Paradise Lost have really defined a unique sound that will no doubt see their fanbase open up even further.
Led by vocalist Nick Holmes and guitarist Greg Mackintosh, the line-up is rounded out by Aaron Aedy (g), Stephen Edmondson (b) and Lee Morris (d, back vox).

PARADISE LOST "SYMBOL OF LIFE" --- THE MUSIC SYNDICATE
Refusing to limit the parameters of the group’s future development, the band’s creative guide, Greg Mackintosh began to experiment more heavily with electronic instruments and thereby edge Paradise Lost out of the metal mainstream.
Nick Holmes, Greg Mackintosh, Aaron Aedy, Steve Edmondson and Lee Morris bring forth a new work in which there is no shortage of guitar bombast without subjugating themselves to the apparent constraints of their previous history.
Instead, they have released themselves from the fl and white logic of their previous creative decisions and are taking their next artistic steps with a variety of different feet.

PROGRESSIVEWORLD.NET: REVIEWS BY JOHN "BOBO" BOLLENBERG
The way the band introduces Gregorian chant in “Fader” illustrates their daring to incorporating whatever they think will be fitting and original.
Greg Mackintosh’s guitar sounds as if it just left some early Cure, albums but once again it fits the arrangement rather well.
The only setback, maybe, is the violins, which for my taste are mixed too much in the background.

50% is axe-man Greg Mackintosh, who spills simple yet direct and at times vitriolic riffs (listen to the spaceship guitar of “Let Me Drown”), his style is restrained; though listening to any of his solos provides enough proof to establish the lad as one of the most underrated axemen in metal.
At his most stretched, he greatly reminisces James Hetfield before all that ‘gimme fuel, gimme fire, gimme all that I desire’ crap and during the most melodic moments his delivery provides a refreshing and rare crystal clear pronunciation in a genre obsessed with grunting.
The American version of this album comes with two bonus tracks: “Let Me Drown” and “A Side You’ll Never Know,” the former is classic Paradise Lost with Mackintosh’s guitar hovering and drawing figures over the song.

 Paradise Lost Bass Tabs
Paradise Lost's line-up has remained remarkably consistent for a long-standing heavy metal band, consisting of singer Holmes, guitarists Greg Mackintosh and Aaron Aedy, and bassist Steve Edmonson.
Holmes and Mackintosh are the principal composers, with almost all of the band's songs credited solely to them.
Only the band's drumming position has changed, with original sticks man Matthew Archer leaving in 1994 to be replaced by ex- Marshall Law drummer Lee Morris.

Nick’s vocals are good on every song while Greg’s guitar-work and songwriting ability are still amazing after all these years.
Another reason I enjoyed this album is the subtle use of orchestration on some songs.
