Osby recontextualizes the original melodies in his own fragmented lyric image with phrasing that skips off the one beats and into the shadowy rhythmic corners painted by Yonezawa.
Osby's interaction with the pianist is near symbiotic, but it is the fireworks he and Payton engage in that take the tunes over the top.
Osby's weaves steamy fills around her, and his rhythm section brings her rendering of the lyrics a poignancy we haven't heard in a while.

 Greg Osby: St. Louis Shoes
Still, Osby demonstrated that he was not only a capable jazz musician, but that he had put a good deal more thought into his hip-hop and funk-based experiments than most of his contemporaries.
Osby’s arrangement on the Ellington classic is very sharp, particularly the ensemble passage that follows the initial thematic statement and solo.
By the time Osby comes in with his solo, the piece is starting to sound like a bebop classic, and by the end of the piece it sounds more modern still.

With a full command of the language of bebop, a taste for rhythmic complexity, and a fiery approach to his primary instrument, the alto saxophone, he has never been afraid to take chances with his music and like most creative people, is a restless artist in a state of perpetual forward motion.
Louis born and grown on August 3, 1960, Osby's gritty musical persona took shape amidst the harsh reality of life in the inner city, where boys had to be men long before their time and life was lived on compromising terms.
Says Osby, " My musical thinking for performance and composition advanced by light years as Jack was open to my input and was very encouraging in pushing me to to maintain a steady flow of experimentation." In 1987, Osby signed his first recording deal with an obscure German label, JMT (Jazz Music Today).

Greg Osby is a true son of Charlie Parker, the great alto saxophonist who died in 1955 at age 34.
Not that Osby shares any of Parker’s self-destructive hedonism, nor does he imitate the high-flown, curlicued figures that Parker and his worthy collaborators spun off in creation of a jazz language that came to be called bebop.
Osby is, as Parker was, a fiery engine at the core of small group interaction, and he generates the heat of dry ice.

Osby opened his first Scullers set with three tunes from the new album that showed off the probing intelligence and surprising twists of his coolly considered style.
Osby eventually eased the tension with longer lines that skated over the rhythm section's fluid swing, but even these passages, bristling with sharp harmonic leaps, defied expectations of length and timing as they expanded and contracted.
Osby has found an equal in the impressive young pianist Jason Moran, who delighted in setting himself challenges for the sheer thrill of working his way out of trouble.

At 39, Osby is neither a young phenom nor a towering senior and the ambiguity allows him some freedom.
That his burnished intensity is balanced by thoughtfulness and tact could be attributed to the presence of Hall (a paragon of economy; consult his solo on "Nature Boy") and Hill (whose duos with the leader convey a lovely sparseness).

He began recording albums under his own name for the label JMT in the 1980s, but his most celebrated work has been a run of records for Blue Note.
Osby has contributed to the homages to Miles Davis's 1970s electric jazz performed by Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smith's "Yo Miles" group.
The Village Voice critic Francis Davis wrote of his contribution to their double album Upriver, "Greg Osby superimposes his own brand of rhythmic complexity (one fully worthy of Wayne Shorter) on the rhythm section's static vamps every time he steps forward."

Osby’s alto sound is marvelous, wide open as Charlie Parker or even Ornette Coleman, but his compositions sometimes seem as though they are derived according to a mathematical theory.
Payton is at home with Osby’s harmonic conceptions while at the same time being able, with a blues riff here, a growl there, to keep things very down to earth.
But Osby’s solo on the piece is grounded in Charlie Parker even as it builds in both intensity and angularity, and ultimately it comes across as one of his best solos on the CD.

And right around this time, Osby was sailing into his own future as a recording artist / leader, first for the German label JMT and eventually for Blue Note, the label he’s called home since 1991.
Perhaps unknown to many listeners, Osby’s first live album Banned in New York was an intentional lo-fi effort that was recorded direct to a budget Mini Disc recorder, placed on a table directly in front of the bandstand.

This is still Greg Osby's date, of course, which is why he composed almost all of the songs, except for one by Bjrk and Mingus's classic "Self Portrait in Three Colors." The opening "Entruption" is a wonderfully frustrating performance, using space to give a stop-start feel, without sacrificing an implied groove.
Greg Osby is definitely a serious musical thinker with lots of fresh ideas and ways to articulate life in 2002 through the medium of acoustic music.

During that time, Osby hooked up with Steve Coleman and members of the M-Base collective, experimenting in creating an angular, abrasive style of jazz that included rap and hip-hop components.
In the late 1990s, Osby became a central figure in Blue Note's group of young signings, and worked regularly on disc and on tour with pianist Jason Moran and vibes player Stefon Harris.
Some of his finest, most inspired soloing unites the angular lines and edgy rhythms of his earlier days with the flowing swing of bebop, and his informal 'Banned in New York' disc catches him in top form in a club setting.

Some of these sessions include trio songs, but none comprise exclusively music for saxophone, bass and drums. "A lot of trios I've heard sound like they were originally intended to be quartet dates," Osby states, explaining his past reluctance to eschew a chordal instrument.
He's recently documented duos with drum-master Andrew Cyrille and impressionistic pianists Marc Copland and Masabumi "Poo" Kikuchi; recorded the rhythmically complex music of Turkish guitarist Timucin Sahin; and shared a front line with Wynton Marsalis at New York's Jazz Standard last spring.
