  Smokebox: Interview With Greg Sage
Sage squirms at the thought of being considered a living legend, won’t be nailed down on plans for live performances, and sees little in the way of creative output from the youth of today, most of them much too young to have seen him in his touring days.
Greg Sage lives today in Phoenix, Arizona, where he spends his time ensconced at his studio, Zeno Records, (www.zenorecords.com) where he produces bands, remasters tapes for CD format, and has released sporadic CDs of new material by the Wipers and as a solo artist.
Sage: Well, now that punk is twenty years old—we definitely weren’t under the pretense of being punk, we didn’t wear fl leather coats with chains and "The Clash" spray painted on the back during that time—that’s what being punk was at the beginning, it was definitely a statement, at least in my opinion.

Greg's knack for using distortion as an additional instrument coupled with his painful, alienated words and highly perceptive take on human life would help cement his legacy in the world of independent rock.
Greg Sage: As with every Wipers LP I would spend many months observing people and their situations to get ideas of what was in their mind and their motivations.
Greg Sage: Not really, I think the influence was more of the idea of it being cool to be real artist than the idea of being just a band or rock star.

Sage's original goal was to release 15 records in ten years, free of traditional band aspects like touring and photo shoots.
Sage would also reason that the timing was never right, as he and Plouf had trouble securing a bassist who would be willing to learn over 100 songs and tour unglamorously to little fanfare.
Sage himself was never a fan of touring; trudging through the States to promote records had been nothing but one nightmare after another, he never got a thrill from the attention that comes with being a frontman, and only a couple towns -- specifically Boston and Chicago -- were regularly supportive.

Considering how similar Greg Sage's solo work is to the Wipers, I have often regarded his second solo album, Sacrifice for Love as nothing more than a "lost" Wipers album.
Possibly the major difference is that this solo release is much more reliant on his mournful, "lonesome coyote howling in the desert" facet of his personality, as opposed to the somewhat less soulful Wipers releases.
Sage's guitar stylings and excellence sense of appropriate soloing are still firmly intact.

Led by singer/guitarist Greg Sage, Portland, Oregon's Wipers began as a trio playing heavy rock that mixed high velocity and volume to obscure songs with introspective and intelligent lyrics.
Come the Seattle explosion, the otherwise overlooked Sage (in America: in Europe he has always routinely sold out theaters) suddenly found himself considered a guru of sorts, despite his stylistic distance from the metallic and '70s-inspired hard-rock bands who held him in such esteem.
Rather, with characteristic independence, Sage went even prettier, spacier and moodier than his previous work in order to get away from the public desire for him to rock out with his new crop of admirers.

Greg Sage's first stopgap solo album was considerably more controlled than his work in the Wipers.
The flened thrust that made his band famous was replaced with thin, fiddly guitar work, not a rare occurrence in a situation like this, but the cold, raw-boned quality that fans were so fond of had also remained intact.
Sage's diaphragm drawl stumbled around well-built compositions and articulated truly dreadful lyrics, the album's nadir being "World Without Fear," which was plagued with sullen platitudes and an embarrassingly cliché-wrought Hands Across America humanism.

Greg Sage (helped out by drummer Steve Plouf) resurrected the Wipers for Herd (Tim Kerr, 1996), that marked a devastating return to form with some of his most irresistible and catchies songs (Psychic Vampire, The Herd, Resist) and The Power In One (Zeno, 2000), an album that is as old-fashioned as understated.
