Rolie calls the documentary film made of that landmark concert "the mother of all music Videos", and the event did indeed skyrocket Santana into instant worlwide renown.
Rolie toured extensively with Journey, remaining on throughout multiple personnel changes, including the 1978 addition of Steve Perry as lead vocalist ("We were now writing for singers instead of solos", says Rolie) before exiting after the hugely successful 1981 live double album Captured.
During the ‘80’s Rolie played, wrote and produced on the Santana albums Shango and Freedom, and released his debut, self-titled 1985 solo album and its 1987 follow-up Gringo, before co-founding the all-new Journe-esque rock group The Storm at the tail end of the decade.

Gregg Rolie (born June 17, 1947 in Seattle, Washington) is an American keyboardist, organist, and singer, who is one of the founding members of the bands Santana, Journey, The Storm, and Abraxas Pool, as well as his current Gregg Rolie Band.
After leaving Journey in 1980, Gregg released several solo albums and formed The Storm in 1991 with Steve Smith, Ross Valory, Josh Ramos and Kevin Chalfant, whose voice resembles that of Steve Perry.

 Gregg Rolie
Gregg Rolie first came to the public attention as a founding member of The Santana Blues Band, eventually just called Santana, a project created with guitarist Carlos Santana (hence the name) after the two met at a jam session in San Francisco.
Rolie was a significant contributor up through the first four Santana releases, acting as a combination of writer, producer, keyboardist and lead vocalist -- it is in fact his voice you hear on Santana's most recognizable song, 1970's Black Magic Woman.
After Santana, Rolie's intention was to leave the music industry entirely and open a restaurant with his father in his home town of Seattle; that plan was scuttled by an offer from his former road manager to put together another band.

After a couple of years off, Gregg decided to release a couple of solo albums and then, in 1990, formed a band with his former Journey band mates, Ross Valory and Steve Smith, called The Storm.

But Rolie -- whose energetic, highly percussive tunes are given that vibe via Dave Amato's various blistering guitars -- comes by the vibe legitimately, having co-founded the band Santana with Carlos in 1967.
Fans of Rolie from that era and from his years as a founding member of Journey might enjoy his first solo recording in many years as a nice nostalgic visit, and the CD booklet offers many amusing photos and hairstyles that date back to Woodstock.
Yet as a singer, Rolie's energy and enthusiasm for feisty Latin grooves is just as spirited as that of guys like Ricky Martin and others over 20 years younger.

Gregg Rolie : Gringo - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
By the time 1988's Gringo rolled around, Journey had all but called it a day (until their reunion a decade or so later) and Gregg Rolie was going in a decidedly different direction than his tenure in either Journey or Santana.
As "The Hands of Time" immediately makes evident, Rolie was shooting for the top of the pop charts, falling somewhere between Daryl Hall's "Dreamtime" and Don Johnson's "Heartbeat" on the musical landscape.
Frank Zappa alumni Arthur Barrow and Vinnie Colaiuta make guest appearances on "Talk Talk," and in the process completely forget the technicalities and complexities Zappa taught them on tour, adhering instead to a petrified forest of boom-bap drumbeats and overly glossed keyboard stabs.
