		The Gregg Smith Singers were organized in 1955 when Gregg Smith, a graduate teaching assistant in the music department of the Los Angeles campus of the University of California, gathered together a group of young singers and musicians interested in performing new or little-known works.
		Since then, the Gregg Smith Singers have toured extensively in Europe and America and have performed in most of the major international music festivals.
		Each member of the chorus is a music graduate from a university or college in southern California and is also a professional musician, many singers doubling as instrumentalists.

		In the late 50s I wrote several works for the Gregg Smith Singers including an a cappella suite, “Landscapes”, a whole album of Christmas arrangements called “Christmas Around The World” for Crown Records, and one of my first major choral works, a “Magnificat” for chorus, brass and strings.
		At the end of the decade I received a commission from the New York State Council for the Arts to write a children’s opera; the result was “Rip Van Winkle”, a work that has had almost a dozen performances to date.
		This was premiered by the Gregg Smith Singers in November, 2001 and received a fine New York Times review.
