The popularity of gospel recordings and of gospel-style harmonies spawned thousands of impromptu sidewalk vocal groups; their influence— noticeable in the early work of the Ravens and the Robins, among others—had an enormous effect on the vocal-based style of fifties rock 'n' roll.
When the record was released in 1945 it had enormous sales, in the white market as well, and may have been responsible for the subsequent organization of numerous other West Coast record companies.
Her first major recording was the 1950 hit “Teardrops from My Eyes”; it was quickly followed by “I Know,” “I'll Wait for You,” “Daddy, Daddy,” and “5- 10-15 Years,” which was number one on the rhythm-and-blues charts in both the United States and England.

Such was their success that many fans demanded a record release, so Jimmy and Duane together with Buddy Long and The Western Melody Boys went along to Audio Recorders in Phoenix and cut a song written by Lee titled ‘Soda fountain girl', which was issued on Preston (212) in the Phoenix area only in 1956.
In 1960 Lee again recorded two songs for the Jamie label, namely 'The girl on death row' from the motion picture 'Why must I die?', which was originally written for Sanford Clark but was never issued and 'Words mean nothing'.
In 1968 Lee then switched again to Reprise Records which was the company he produced records for and did some successful duets with Nancy Sinatra in 1967 and 1968 as a follow-up to her personal hits.

The Shangri-las records have often been described as comically over-dramatic, but records like "Remember (Walking In The Sand)", "Leader Of The Pack," "Past, Present And Future" and "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" have stood the test of time and are considered among the greatest records of the genre.

It was there that they had their first hit in 1961, under the aegis of Phil Spector, with the single "Be My Boy."
