Del Pilar was born on Nov. 14, 1875, into a generation of Filipinos destined to fight for independence against two different colonial powers in two different centuries, all within a few short, bloody, years.
Del Pilar's home province of Bulakan was a hotbed of discontent; his uncle, Marcelo H. Del Pilar, was a leader in the anti-Spanish Propaganda Movement, famed for his scathing pamphlets in the Tagalog vernacular.
Lightly wounded in the rescue attempt, del Pilar sought refuge in the mountains and fishponds of the Bulakan hinterlands.

In 1955, the Municipality of Concepcion in Ilocos Sur Province was renamed in honor of Gregorio del Pilar.

The 24 year-old "boy general" led a 60-man Filipino rearguard in Tirad Pass and was later killed after being shot in the neck.
He was also responsible for the short victory over Major Bell in the Battle of Quingua, in which his forces repelled a cavalry charge, and killed the highly decorated Colonel Stotsenberg along with six other cavalrymen.
