Gregory Fortuin talked about the time that his car was nearly towed away and he chose to pay a fine rather than make a scene and cause further problems – ‘stuff’ happened and he responded to it to ensure that people maintained their dignity.
Some key people who have influenced Gregory Fortuin are his mother, widowed when her children were very young, his grandmother and Papa Swan, an elderly man who supported his mother as he and his brothers grew up.
Gregory Fortuin spoke of the huge influence all of these people had on the development of his values and urged principals present to mentor a child just as Papa Swan had done for him.

FortuinÝ involved himself in work to try to understand and begin to address that problem and is still Chairman of the Youth Suicide Awareness Trust.
When I spoke to Fortuin in his office in downtown Auckland in early June of this year, I wanted to find out how he would approached the challenges of his new job, what his priorities were and how he sees the role of the new Ministry of Ethnic Affairs.
Fortuin's role sees him as answerable to the Associate Minister of Justice and with a responsibility to oversee the interests of all the constituent ethnic groups of New Zealand.

Mr Fortuin is well suited to this difficult job as a former 'coloured' South African subject to all the discrimination of apartheid.
My complaint is about the racial abuse directed at Mainland Stevedore workers by the Waterfront Workers Union on Monday when the dispute turned ugly.
