Gregory Nava is very creative when he accents different colors in each of the three segments, and in his smart use of dialogue with the great cussing scenes.
Gregory Nava uses the film to fully explain the cultural differences of Rosa, Enrique, and her family--language, religion, music, and clothing--and in the process we learn about their estrangement from society.
Gregory Nava argues that modern society looks upon indigenous Amerindians as foreigners, ironically in their ancestral land and treat them with disdain.

Filming the Chicano Family Saga.: Cineaste
Nava's stylistic approaches in My Family are conventional, but, as he did in El Norte, the director succeeds in eliciting strong, realistic performances from his actors and in creating a powerful drama that is appealing both for its social conscience and the sensitivity with which the individual characters are portrayed.
Nava: I think the creative process is a very complex one in which you try to see things that are universal about family experiences and stories, the threads that run through these families, so that you can capture that reality.
Nava: I was trying to tell a story of this particular family, and I felt that if I made every single incident in the movie revolve around some public issue, that it would just become a catalog of all the stuff that this community has had to deal with throughout the years.

In director Gregory Nava's simple and beautiful film, Selena (played by Jennifer Lopez) comes across as she will be remembered forever by her fans: perky, friendly, a joker and infectiously happy.
Nava, who also wrote the screenplay, interjects plenty of humor into his story as well, and Lopez handles Selena's sassy sense of humor quite easily.
Nava has created a film that is a celebration of the singer, and he wisely puts little focus on Yolanda Saldivar (Lupe Ontiveros), the woman who was stealing from Selena and eventually convicted of ending Selena's life.

Nava's engaging script wisely mines his subject's life for humor and conflict, embracing Selena Quintanilla's passion for music, her affair with Chris Perez (John Seda), her tumultuous relationship with her father, Abraham (Edward James Olmos), and the enduring affection of her fans.
Yet the movie works, it is not an epic, grand piece, but it is still well-directed by Gregory Nava, who manages to capture the characters and their feelings in a believable way.
Also, in the tradition of all singer movie bios, Nava also adds some mythic touches we know probably didn't take place, but for the sake of elevating our modern artists into rock god/goddess status, he puts them in (take that scene where she quiets a huge crowd by just raising a finger for example).

Gregory Nava's sprawling multi-generational saga of 60 years in the life of a Mexican family living in the U.S. is a tumultuous, funny, and moving experience.
As the film traces the Sanchez family's history from the arrival of patriarch José Eduardo Lopez Rojas in Los Angeles through the gang wars and Salvadoran death squads of the 1980s, Nava focuses on the constant struggle of the immigrants to be accepted in their new country while retaining a pride in their ethnic identity.
Although the film is at times sentimental with a plot that verges on soap opera, it's impossible not to be swept up in the lives of characters that are written and played with such passion and complexity.
