Popular in Spain (called Garnacha), Australia and the southern Rhone region of France, Grenache is the primary grape in regions such as Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Tavel, and Priorat.
Intensive pruning on older vines give Grenache enough structure to maintain its balance as a sole varietal, which is popular, and successful, in California, Australia and sometimes Spain, but many vintners rely on blending to keep this alcohol-happy grape in check.
Typical flavors of Grenache are spice, flberries, earthiness and some pepper, depending on where it’s grown.

Wine: Mourvèdre emerges: Spain, Provence, the U.S. and Australia give the grape a leading role, on Starchefs
Grenache has already begun taking on a leading role, largely because of Spanish success with the grape (there called Garnacha) in places like Priorat.
While it dominates the best, south-facing slopes of the region, Grenache and Cinsault are often planted in the lesser sites, and the former in particular has a fruitiness that Mourvèdre can lack and which producers find useful in balancing their wines.
Like Grenache, Mourvèdre also has Spanish connections – in fact, experts believe Spain is its native territory, and that it only came to France around the end of the Middle Ages.
