		The ongoing Grendel series was published by Comico from 1986 to 1990, with Wagner as writer collaborating with a a variety of artists.
		His troops became known as "Grendels", and to be a Grendel became an honourable, high-status position in society.
		In the OPEC wastes, Grendel and Jupiter were captured by a band of rebels opposed to the misrule of Laurel Kennedy.

		In April 1993 Matt Wagner, acclaimed writer of various Grendel comics, began a more faithful revival of the golden age Sandman in Sandman Mystery Theatre, an ongoing series which ran for 70 issues and 6 years.
		The comic was a 1930s period piece, set largely in Manhattan, and was (predictably) described as "noirish".
		Despite the way it sounds, the comic had a definite Vertigo sensibility, with adult themes, rounded characters and understated drama.
