In the game world of Warhammer 40,000, Gretchin (also known as Grotz in the Warhammer 40,000 universe) are basically smaller Goblinoids (Orkoids), which are more cowardly than Orks and are usually used as living shields, to clear mine fields, are stepped on to get through difficult terrain, and sometimes even as emergency rations.
Gretchin also serve as attendants or "ammo runts" to Ork warlords, assistants to Ork mechanics, and orderlies to Ork doctors.
Gretchin do not develop into orks, but instead emerge from their Orkoid Cocoon's prior to the Orks.

  ORK RULES
Orks encourage their Gretchin with the subtlety of a slave master and they are known to cheer the Gretchin on in the front lines of battle to absorb the first rounds of enemy fire.
Gretchin are numerous creatures that are easily killed, but their reckless sense of scavenging allows them to take advantage of their numbers to swarm over dead bodies and claim items of wargear, including better weapons.
The Gretchin is beyond sane from its moments spent in the Warp and it explodes in beastial fury, attacking the target in close assault.

Gretchins do have Weirdboyz, just like orks, but because they are rather lacking in skill and try to avoid combat whenever possible, they are seldom considered worth anything by the Orks (or ork players).
Gretchin Weirdboys are some of the few psychic gretchins that survive to actually develop usefull Orky powers.
Gretchin Minderz may replace their autopistol for an autogun or a blunderbuss for free.

Gretchin have acquired plenty of practical know-wots about the operation and construction of Big Gunz, and are very comfortable with the idea of hanging back and shooting at an enemy, as opposed to rushing up and getting into their teeth.

I remeber since the second ediction that gretchin were armed with autoguns and fought 'en mass.
Gretchin Mobz, in the 3rd edition, are armed with Grot blasters, are utter crap, and again I believe they're closer to snotlings than Gretchin.
I was always under the impression that gretchin and grots were basically the same, runty little orks.
