Gretsch - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gretsch ultimately sold thousands of guitars with Chet's name on the pickguard, most notably the Country Gentleman[2] (an instrumental hit for Chet) and the Tennessean [3], a lower cost version of the Country Gent.
Gretsch's fortunes were greatly aided when, in the mid-1960s, George Harrison played a Gretsch Country Gentleman [4] on the Ed Sullivan Show.
Gretsch agreed, and the result is the famous blonde electric twelve string that Nesmith used during the Monkees' entire run, both on the series, in the recording studio, and in concert.

Gretsch had dabbled in electric guitars prior to 1955, producing a limited number of Hawaiian lap steels and the Electromatic arch-tops, among other models, but around 1954 the Golden Age of Gretsch guitars began.
Although the 6120 was originally directed at the country market, it has been favored by rock and rollers from Eddie Cochran to Pete Townshend to Brian Setzer.
Yet another Fred Gretsch had managed to purchase the remnants of the company — little more than the name, really — and set up shop outside of Savannah, Ga. The guitars, based on classic Gretsch models, would be made in Japan with a mixture of American and European parts.

Additionally, Gretsch electronics (pickups, switch/knob layout) is not as sonically sound or versatile as those of other makers during the same period.
Gretsch's reputation is based more on their electric guitars than acoustic.
Although Gretsch's during this period seem chronologically ordered (and in many cases are), the numbers and labels often can not determine the exact year of manufacture due to spec inconsistences.

When introduced, the 6120 cost $385 and sported a wagonload of western decorations: cow's heads and cactus etchings in the block markers,a big G brand on the top and Chet Atkins' signature on an engraved signpost on the pickguard.
By '70 the 6120 was wearing the squared-off pickguard common to the Baldwin era.
The 6120 was first re-introduced in 1989, with two distinct models, the 6120 Standard and 6120 Western.

Then in 1961 the model stayed single cutaway (unlike the 6120 which went to double cutaway in early 1962) and changed to 2 pickups and a thinner body.

In the 1950s, as the electric guitar market began to grow, Gretsch teamed up with Chet Atkins, whose distinctive finger-style electric guitar playing would influence generations of future musicians.
Although Chet would eventually make his mark as a guitar designer, on this first signature model, he was only responsible for the Bigsby vibrola and the thick bracing under the top.
Like Chet's music, his signature guitar had an appeal that transcended all genres of music, and this particular 1956 Gretsch 6120 was owned and used by Bobby Whiteside, a producer at Chess records, the legendary R&B label.

The high end fairs better if only because you can hear the Gretsch twang and "schwing" but it has to be coaxed out with the Bigsby and perhaps a delay pedal or reverb, and it still sounds unsophisticated, flat, and a bit like an ice pick to the eardrums.
The old Gretsches had this and it was one of the few things they did really well on those old guitars from a quality standpoint.
It would seem that Gretsch in its current state is very arrogant and not a small bit greedy when it comes to dealing with their customers.

It's important to remember that Gretsch used DeArmound pickups (which are single-coil as opposed to the FilterTrons which are Humbuckers) in the mid-fifties and that's where the legendary Gretsch Rockabilly sound originated from.
Filtertrons are Gretsch's own humbuckers, designed by Ray Butts for Chet Atkins who told him the DeArmonds had too much bass for his style of playing.
Gretsch started using them in late '57 and at the same time discontinued using the DynaSonic on all models.

The last vestiges of the West on this beautiful 6120 are the horseshoe inlay on the peghead and the rural-looking signpost that bears his signature on the pickguard.
The model does still retain the functional necessities that Chet specified from the beginning: a metal nut and bridge for better sustain, plus a Bigsby vibrola.
