Diving in the Grevelingen Meer (Lake)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The Grevelingen Meer (Lake) used to be an open estuary, connecting the east of the Volkerak with the fresh waters of the Rhein and the Maas.
Due to massive desalinisation and the accompanying death of many of the marine creatures, it was decided to ensure that the Grevelingen Meer changed back into salt water, and to this end a sluice was built into the Brouwers Dam in 1984, and a lift sluice in the Grevelingen Dam at the same time.
Due to the decision to maintain the salt-water character of the Grevelingen Meer, and the absence of current, it is and remains a very interesting and safe diving area, considered safe for all levels of diving experience.

Herkingen is an old village at the Grevelingen Lake and only 50 km to the south of the city of Rotterdam.
The Grevelingen Lake used to be connected to the North Sea, but after the great flooding of 1953 a great dam was built to protect the area from the sea.
The water of Grevelingen Lake is still rather salty, so for those who prefer freshwater there are two pools in the resort.

 Grevelingen Lake
The right hand side is one of the most beautiful spots in the Grevelingen lake.
This spot is very famous for its wreck, which is located at a depth of 7 meters, east of the pier (with the starting tower).
The wreck itself is not very spectacular but there are people that cannot find it and therefore it happens to be the most discussed dive location in the Grevelingen lake.
