It's a classic tale of the road, in which Miller's character falls prey to a "golden-haired chanteuse" while DeLisle offers that all she wanted was to raise a family.
There are a few times when DeLisle seems to be on the edge of being too theatrical, but she always eases off before she crosses that line.
DeLisle's one of those full-throated singers with the artistic temperament to match, and it'll be really interesting to see where she goes from here.

DeLisle’s affinity for songs of heartbreak, loss and occasional redemption—“It’s not interesting to write about people everything works out for,” she quips—may be traced back to her childhood in San Diego, CA.
DeLisle’s anchor through that turbulent time was her grandmother, Eva Flores Ruth, a vocalist who performed with salsa legend Tito Puente.
DeLisle was writing and recording her first album when a serendipitous twist of fate introduced her to Marvin Etzioni, initially brought aboard to play mandolin on some songs.

Grey Delisle - The Graceful Ghost - Stylus Magazine
Although Delisle is a native Los Angelesian and no stranger to the glamour of Hollywood (she’s one of the more prolific cartoon voiceover artists), she has an honest love for traditional, God-filled backwoods country music.
Gothic southern tales abound, from the story of a wrongly declared dead soldier’s wife who is forced to wed her husband’s brother (“The Maple Tree”) to the funeral narrative for a young wife (“Walking in a Line”).
Delisle knows the art of country storytelling, and doesn’t attempt to stretch or distort it, but represent it with a loving honesty.

Grey Delisle: The Small Time - PopMatters Music Review
I have been pondering this one Grey Delisle and her debut album The Small Time now for a little longer than that and cannot shake the feeling that I am listening to a more stylized Jewel.
Grey wrote her first tune "Buckle Shoes" at five years old, and many years later in 1998 she fronted an all-girl "cowpunk/surf ban" called Side Saddle.
I will admit that Delisle's singing is much more twangy and "rootsy" than Jewel's, but her inflection and handling of the material is almost too cute for words at times.

Grey Delisle from Los Angeles is the latest addition, but like fellow Angelino Gillian Welch, she comes at history in a different, almost antiquated way.
DeLisle comes on like the ghost of Mother Maybelle or Kitty Wells (although sexier and more polished than either), and her songwriting shows ample hours studying at the feet of Dolly Parton (insert jokes about "the shade" here).

Grey DeLisle performs Thursday, July 28, at the Granada Theater, with Slaid Cleaves and Murray Hammond.
Like Parton, DeLisle has a voice as pure and fragile as a mountain stream, and her story-based songs are equal parts lovin', lustin' and worshipin'.
Not every song works, but DeLisle's willingness to experiment is refreshing, and when the last verse of the mandolin-spiked "The Bloody Bucket" revs up like an engine fueled on moonshine, any missteps are quickly forgiven.

Grey DeLisle: Iron Flowers - PopMatters Music Review
Grey DeLisle's 2004 album, The Graceful Ghost, basically summed it up pretty well -- DeLisle had a haunting, sweet, rich and almost childlike innocence in her voice that brought life into each track.
The drummer opens the song before DeLisle takes it down a Cowboy Junkies route that brings with it her lovely lullaby timbre as the pedal steel weaves in and out.
Meanwhile, the only time she resorts to the whispery, country-meets-dirge tone, found often on her previous album, is during "Bloody Bucket", which is easily a close cousin to early Dolly Parton circa "Jolene" or "Coat of Many Colors".
