Fantail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantails are small, insectivorous birds of Australasia belonging to the genus Rhipidura.
Four of the five species are about 15 to 18 cm long, specialist aerial feeders, and known as "fantails"; the fifth, the Willie Wagtail, is a little larger and though still an expert hunter of insects on the wing, concentrates as much on terrestrial prey.
Note that the true wagtails are part of the genus Motacilla and family Motacillidae and are not particularly close relatives of the fantails.

Grey Fantail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grey Fantail is plain in colour: mid to dark grey or grey-brown above, lighter (often yellowish) below, with a white throat, white markings over the eye, and (depending on the race) either white-edged or entirely white outer tail feathers.
It grows to some 16 centimentres in length, of which half is the tail, which, as the name implies, is often fanned out during display.
Colour, however, is not the Grey Fantail's hallmark: it is movement, for during waking hours the bird is almost never still.

CPBR Summer Scholarship 2004-05 - Phylogeography and Evolution of the Grey Fantail Complex in Australia
Phylogeographic studies can provide insight into continent-wide patterns of gene flow and the effectiveness of geographical barriers, aid assessment of the conservation and taxonomic status of isolated populations, and provide a temporal and genetic context to patterns of morphological and behavioural differentiation.
This project consists of investigation of the phylogeography of Australian representatives of the Grey Fantail species complex, assessment of the status of geographically isolated populations within the group, comparison of genetic with morphological and behavioral variation, and comparison of patterns of speciation in these birds with those of similarly distributed taxa.
Until recently, all six forms were typically treated as subspecies of the Grey Fantail.

CSIRO Plant Industry - Summer Student Program the projects
This project presents an opportunity to learn about biodiversity and evolution through genetic study of a group of birds known as the Grey Fantail complex.
This group is generally divided into two species based on appearance and behaviour: the Grey Fantail, which is widely distributed in southern, central, and northeastern Australia, and the Mangrove Grey Fantail, which is restricted to mangroves of northern Australia and southern New Guinea.
The student will use advanced molecular techniques to investigate genetic variation in this group and to compare genetic data with morphological and behavioural information, providing insight into patterns of speciation and biogeography.
