Plover - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plovers are a widely distributed group of wading birds belonging to the subfamily Charadriinae.
Plovers are found throughout the world, and are characterised by relatively short bills.
Food is insects, worms or other invetebrates, depending on habitat, which are obtained by a run-and-pause technique, rather than the steady probing of some other wader groups.

PLOVER - LoveToKnow Article on PLOVER   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Others have thought it is from the spotted (as though with rain-drops) upper plumage of two of the commonest species of plovers, to which the name especially belongsthe Charadr-ius pluvialis of Linnaeus, or golden plover, and the Squatarola helvetica of recent ornithologists, or grey plover.
The grey plover is a bird of almost circumpolar range, breeding in the far north of America, Asia and eastern Europe, frequenting in spring and autumn the coasts of the more temperate parts of each continent, and generally retiring farther southward in winterexamples not unfrequently reaching Cape Colony, Ceylon, Australia and even Tasmania.
Though the various forms here spoken of as plovers are almost certainly closely allied, they must be regarded as constituting a very indefinite group, for hardly any strong line of demarcation can be drawn between them and the Sandpipers and Snipes (q.v.).

Even more unusual, were the 11 000 Chestnut Banded Plover (6 720 on the Lagoon and 4 350 at Sandwich) which have upset assumptions of a 10 000-strong population for the whole of southern Africa.
In addition the 1 900 Grey Plover was an extremely high total for a winter-time count when the birds are supposed to be in the northern hemisphere for their breeding season.
Organiser Keith Wearne said even the summer count completed in January this year had only recorded 520 Grey Plover, and that far fewer birds were expected at this time of year, even allowing for an exceptionally good breeding year in 1997.

Tundra Plovers is authoritatively documented and beautifully illustrated, a combination that recommends it to both the professional ornithologist and the amateur bird enthusiast.
The main text is organized into 14 chapters covering the major topics of taxonomy, plumages, phylogeny, biogeography, breeding distribution and population trends, breeding schedules and social behavior, sex roles and parental behavior, migration, nonbreeding distribution, behavior and ecology, diet, and conservation.
Because Tundra Plovers emphasizes the resuits of that original work, it sometimes fails to convey the full range of what is known about these species from other regions.

Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The distribution of breeding birds on Siberian tundra was studied around nests of Long-tailed Skuas Stercorarius skua, Grey Plovers Pluvialis squatarola, Pacific Golden Plovers Pluvialis fulva and Bar-tailed Godwits Limosa lapponica, all of wich have been observed attacking avian predators entering their nesting territories.
The efficiency of defence was measured using artificial nests 30, 70 and 150 m from nests of the four species.
Nest distribution of local birds around the potential protectors reflected the efficiency with which the protectors defended their territory, but most of all it reflected the survival probabilities found for artificial nests: The number of nests located within 100 m from Grey Plover nests were significantly higher than in control plots.
