The Grey Wethers are in fact two concentric stone circles that probably date to the Bronze Age.
Near to the Grey Wethers is evidence of an oval enclosure measuring 40 x 48m which is surrounded by a 0.6m stony bank.
Imagine being a youngster living near to the Grey Wethers and being told the story of the boys who dared to play football on a Sunday.

 The Grey Wethers
Sadly however, the next day when he went to collect his new flock he discovered that what he had seen in the mist of the moor or more aptly the mist of cider was in the cold light of day two circles of stone or two circles of Grey Wethers as they are called today.
One warm summer Sunday a group of local boys decided they would have a game of football, so to avoid the wrath of the local preacher they made their way up to the moor to find a suitable pitch out of sight of any prying eyes.
Should you wish to visit the Grey Wethers they can be found ‘grazing’ at grid reference SX 6389 8313.

 World of Froud- TM
As in many circles, the weather-worn stones are considered to be feminine by nature--they take the shape of maidens and dance in a ring at every Hunter's Moon.
The Scorhill and Grey Wethers circles are the largest to be found on Dartmoor.
They say that these stones get up, stretch, and take a stroll with the rise of the sun, shifting their places slightly each time they return again.
