In parts of the United States where they are considered pest, particularly in rural areas, a derogatory term for certain birds of prey, such as the Chickenhawk (a common colloquial name referring to both the Red-tailed Hawk and the Cooper's Hawk), or the Duck hawk (known elsewhere as the Peregrine Falcon).
In the US, the term "buzzard" is never used to refer to birds of prey, like hawks, eagles, falcons, and owls, outside of this context.
Rarely, a derogatory term for any large bird that happens to be a scavenger, such as a raven or albatross (in other words, any large bird that is neither predatory nor flightless).

Smaller birds appear scarce and are apt to be concentrated in small feeding flocks, especially in bamboo brakes and denser foliage in steep gullies and along small permanent streams.
The rather scarce Black-backed Forktail is a typical inhabitant of streams of the foothills and wintering Little Herons, White Wagtails and Grey Wagtails may also be seen.

This case relates to the sighting of a ‘medium sized’ bird of prey considered by the observers to be a Grey-faced Buzzard Butastur indicus on Boigu Island, QLD on the 24
The bird was in view for approximately 4 minutes as it rose from behind low mangroves and circled out of sight.
Members were unable to provide any reasonable arguments as to why this bird was not a Grey-faced Buzzard but the case needed just a few more positive characters for acceptance, particularly for a bird so far out of range at that time of year.

With some 340 species of birds, the park consists of a range of habitat types from dry diperocarp forests on lower slopes to hill evergreen and pine forests at higher altitudes.
On the lower slopes, birds to look out for include wintering species such as Grey Bushchats, Siberian Rubythroats, Buff-throated, Radde's and Yellow-streaked warblers and a few Little and Chestnut Buntings.
Buzzards and occasional Grey faced Buzzard may also be found.

 Trip Report - Kenting Hawk Migration
Every autumn, large numbers of Grey Frog Hawks and Grey-faced Buzzard-eagles migrate pass Kenting National Park at the southern tip of Taiwan, creating an annual specter attracting large numbers of birders each year.
The most numerous hawks were the GREY FROG HAWKS; more than 100 were counted passing this morning.
Instead of GREY FROG HAWKS, the majority of the hawks this morning were large flocks of GREY-FACED BUZZARD-EAGLES.

It is a well-known hawk-watch site, and when I arrived on a Saturday morning the parking lot was full of watchers with high-powered optics; I soon found out why they were high-powered--the migrating raptors (though not the local Black Kites) were incredibly high up, in some cases invisible to the naked eye.
Both times, at different states of the tide, the tidal mudflats were almost empty, except for dozens of Grey Herons; obviously I was at least 6 weeks late for the peak of wader migration, but even so the emptiness was surprising--both here and in subsequent visits to the Tama Estuary [E] and Yatsu mudflats [Y].
My walks around Lake Ashi [A], on the way back to Tokyo from Shiokawa, and around Karuizawa [K], on the way back from Hegura, were to enjoy some glorious scenery and fall colors, and see some of the resident birds.

The 91.3 ha of virgin forest is one of the last remaining coastal hill forest in the country and is an important stop for migratory birds especially raptors - birds of prey including eagles, hawks, buzzards and bazas, whose awesome and spectacular migration flights are a sight to behold.
Altogether over 400 people came to watch the hundreds of birds streaming in across the sea from Sumatra on their homeward journey to central and eastern Asia.

Monday was fine weather, but showed even fewer raptors; the morning yielded only a couple of Grey-faced Buzzards, two more Peregrines, and a N. Goshawk.
Local experts told us that there had been a fine showing of migrants on the Friday before the storm-- that the birds took advantage of the high pressure area that was drawing the typhoon northward, kettled up and left before the typhoon arrived.

Daily counts of migrating raptors were made on 43 days between 27 September and 9 November 2003 near the city of Chumphon in south-east Thailand.
Overall, 170,665 migrating raptors of 15 species were counted during 378 hours of observation (452 birds/hour).The counts of five raptor species (Black Baza Avecida leuphotes, Oriental Honey-buzzard Pernis ptilorhyncus, Eastern Marsh Harrier Circus spilonotus, Chinese Sparrowhawk Accipiter soloensis and Grey-faced Buzzard Bustatur indicus) represent some of the highest totals reported to date.
Winds from the north to west and cloud cover were positively associated with the number of raptors seen.We recommend that counts be continued at Chumphon in the future and that the site is used to promote raptor conservation in Thailand.

The paddyfields of northern Thailand are always thrilling and this year the delights continued with Eastern Marsh and Pied Harriers flapping about in the mist, male Siberian Rubythroats, Dusky Warblers, Black-faced Buntings, Singing Bushlark, Yellow-bellied Prinia and Baya Weaver.
Our last morning of the tour took us the short distance from Chiang Mai to the Royal Project area of Huai Hong Khrai where there is a recently discovered population of Green Peafowls.
We had a last look at Chiang Mai and the ornate temple on Doi Suthep, before it was time for a final sumptuous meal.

At Lotus Hills the raptor passage was fair, largely Japanese Sparrowhawk, but also Grey-faced Buzzard, Upland Buzzard and a Short-toed Snake-eagle.
At Yang Ho wood a female Long-tailed Minivet caused some discussion about its identity, but a Pechora Pipit found by Steve and Marion disappointingly eluded the rest of the group.
