More Grey Market and Grey Imports Information
The term grey import refers to an item that has been imported into a country, legally, but without the agreement of the manufacturer.
Other used imports sold in Ireland are from the UK, the most recognisable being those from General Motors, which badges its cars in the UK as Vauxhalls, not as Opels as in Ireland.
Grey Imports from UK In the United Kingdom, many people have chosen to buy new cars in other EU member states, where pre-tax prices are much lower than in the UK, and then import them into their own country, where they only pay the UK's rate of VAT.

Driving on the left or right - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vehicles registered in Hong Kong and Macau are required to have a special number plate issued by the authorities in Guangdong province to drive legally on the mainland.
Virtually all vehicles are driven with a passenger in place to watch the oncoming traffic and inform the driver as to whether it is safe to overtake or not, as the driver cannot see this from his RHD position.
Vehicles within United States visiting forces bases in the UK drive on the left, even though the US does not provide specific right-hand drive vehicles for their green fleet.

Grey imports are so called because they often appear to be identical to vehicles that have been specifically produced for the European market, yet technical specification and some components will differ.
In the case of Japanese vehicles, this is often due to the punitive MOT test that is conducted by Japanese authorities, meaning that for many customers it is preferable to buy a new vehicle and seek to dispose of the old one.
Hence the majority of Japanese grey imports brought to the UK are 2-3 years old on arrival, and have been sold at a low price because they have not met the stringent Japanese MOT standards.

The Evo was originally intended only for Japanese markets but demand on the 'grey import' market led the Evolution series to be offered through limited type-approval in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998 (Evo V-VI).
Mitsubishi decided to export the eighth generation Evolution to the United States in 2003 after witnessing the success Subaru had in that market with their Impreza WRX, a direct competitor in other global regions.
The Lancer Evolution was unique among its competitors in the World Rally Championship in that it is a homologated Group A car slightly modified to be able to race competitively against WRC class cars.

The RMIF suggest that any grey import car should be labelled as such and a grey import tag should be clearly added to registration documents and held on files at the DVLA.[136] This would enable all future purchasers of the car or motorbike to be made aware that they are buying a grey import.
In terms of parallel imports, one distinction that was made by the BPI was that whilst the term parallel import implies that a product is being imported "in parallel", this is not always the case in the record industry.
The discount inquiry indicates that parallel imported products are, on average, supplied to community pharmacists at a higher discount rate than the equivalent UK-sourced proprietary products.[229] Consequently there is some incentive for pharmacists to dispense parallel imported drugs because their profit levels will then be higher.

While the grey imports can be modified to allegedly meet ADR requirements at time of manufacture, this is because they are generally 15 or more years old.
While the grey imports may seem attractive given their often low market prices, the combination of a lack of parts and service availability and compliance with recent ADRs means purchase price savings can be false economy.

Every vehicle must undergo a compulsory vehicle inspection every two years, at high cost (astronomical in fact) and must meet very high standards.
Avoiding a gross generalisation, the Japanese are very fond of their vehicles and invariably keep them in good condition.

Davies says he is tightening up a practice in which contracts are signed by some ministries for contractors to import vehicles duty-free without following all the rules relating to the types of vehicles.
