Iron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Iron is notable for being the final element produced by stellar nucleosynthesis, and thus the heaviest element which does not require a supernova or similarly cataclysmic event for its formation.
A newer variant of grey iron, referred to as 'ductile iron' is specially treated with trace amounts of magnesium to alter the shape of graphite to sheroids, or nodules, vastly increasing the toughness and strength of the material.
A class of non-heme iron proteins is responsible for a wide range of functions within several life forms, such as enzymes methane monooxygenase (oxidizes methane to methanol), ribonucleotide reductase (reduces ribose to deoxyribose; DNA biosynthesis), hemerythrins (oxygen transport and fixation in marine invertebrates) and purple acid phosphatase (hydrolysis of phosphate esters).

Cast iron - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is made by remelting pig iron, often along with substantial quantities of scrap iron and scrap steel, and taking various steps to remove undesirable contaminants such as phosphorus and sulfur, which weaken the material.
White iron is too brittle for most uses, but with good hardness and abrasion resistance and relatively low cost, it finds use in such applications as balls for rolling-element bearings, the wear surfaces (impeller and volute) of slurry pumps and the teeth of a backhoe's digging bucket.
White cast iron can also be made by using a high percentage of chromium in the iron; Cr is a stong carbide-forming element, so at high enough percentages of chrome, the precipitation of graphite out of the iron is suppressed.

 Grey Iron
Grey irons are brittle, and have little plastic deformation and thus the yield strength and tensile strengths are almost identical.
Grey irons with a ferrite and graphite structure require a long soak at austenitising temperatures This is because there is not enough carbon in the ferrite to produce a fully martensitic structure and carbon must be taken into the matrix by dissolving free graphite.
Grey irons have been used extensively in the past for pipes for water and sewage as they are resistant to attack by alkalis, seawater and some acids.

Compacted graphite iron (CGI), where the graphite particles are elongated as in grey iron but are shorter and thicker and have rounded edges and irregular bumpy surfaces.
The grey iron terminology therefore refers to five different types of grey iron ranging from Type A to Type E. Type A graphite denotes long graphite flakes and is preferred in most applications while Types B through E are degenerate and result in lower strength.
Grey iron is defined by reference to the different types A through E, for example, 90 % Type A plus 10 % Type B. Ductile iron is classified in terms of percent nodularity, that is, what percent of the graphite particles are present as perfect nodules.

 Grey Iron
In grey cast iron the free graphite is in the form of flakes.
The strength of a grey cast iron varies with the section size of the casting due to solidification effects: This is referred to as ‘section sensitivity‘.
Classic applications for grey cast iron are engine cylinder heads and blocks utilising the thin and complex cast sections for water cooling passages and the damping characteristics for quietness.

Cast irons   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The carbon equivalent (CE) of a cast iron helps to distinguish the grey irons which cool into a microstructure containing graphite and and the white irons where the carbon is present mainly as cementite.
However, in grey cast irons, if the cooling rate through the eutectoid temperature is sufficiently slow, then a completely ferritic matrix is obtained with the excess carbon being deposited on the already existing graphite.
Grey cast irons are softer with a microstructure of graphite in transformed-austenite and cementite matrix.

 Ferrous Metal
The principal raw material for all ferrous metals is pig iron which is obtained by smelting iron ore, with coke and lime stone, in the blast furnace.
The cast iron is obtained by remelting pig iron with coke and limestone in a furnace known as cupola.
It is primarily an alloy of iron and carbon.

The problem with white iron is that it is very brittle because the carbon exists as iron carbide instead of pure carbon.
Iron carbide (Fe3C) is a hard and brittle compound sometimes referred to as cementite.
Grey iron (standard cast iron) delivers only moderate strength with almost no elongation because the excess Fe3C flakes act as stress raisers (they make cast iron easy to crack).

The chief variety is the common grey or cottontail (Lepus fioridanus).
The silver grey is a uniform-colored breed, the fur of which is a rich chinchilla grey, varying in depth in the different strains.
From the greater value of the fur, silver greys have been frequently employed to stock warrens, as they breed true to color in the open if the ordinary wild rabbits are excluded.

Iron, steel & metal manufacturing engineering - Class 60 grey iron?
These are usually pearlitic grey irons so Grade 60 should be OK. I would insist on a microscopic examination of appropriate samples to ensure that graphite is OK and that the matrix contains no ferrite or carbides.
Class 60 gray iron might be a difficult animal to produce - class 50 is usually at the top end of the gray iron as cast range.
Higher tensile strength gray irons need low carbon equivalent iron with supplementary alloying to reach the high tensile properties and these are prone to carbides especially in thin sections such as sleeves.

 Ductile Iron
In ductile iron the free graphite is in the form of discrete nodules or spheroids.
The discrete form of the graphite nodules in comparison to the planes of weakness of the graphite flakes in grey iron means that the properties of ductile iron are determined more by the matrix of the material than the form of the graphite.
Ductile iron castings have production and machining cost advantages over steel fabrications, forgings and castings within the limitations of the ductility and impact properties and have strength to weight advantages over grey iron castings where breakage is a problem.

In the initial microstructure of grey cast iron, graphite was in the form of flakes but assumed a spherical/nodular shape after the inclusion of the magnesium.

The use of ductile iron has grown at a rapid rate over the past fifty years.
