The grievance procedure is more than just a means of managing conflict; an understanding and effective use of the procedure may, according to some experts, improve the labour-management relationship.
Using a hypothetical case of a discharge grievance, this study attempts to fill that gap by taking the grievance through both mediation and arbitration, and contrasting the impact of the two mechanisms on the interests of the parties.
This article explores how grievance mediation emerged in the 1980's to become one of the top conflict resolution techniques to be used in resolving union and employer conflicts, especially in the coal industry.

The Faculty Grievance Committee shall act to implement the policies and procedures established by the Faculty of the Medical College of Georgia for the resolution of faculty grievances, for appeals regarding discrimination and harassment complaints, and in matters of suspension and dismissal of faculty members.
Grievance is defined as a complaint arising from the work situation which is a judged deviation from or misinterpretation or misapplication of reasonable practice or policy and shall include complaints arising from dismissal and suspension procedures.
If a resolution of the grievance is not achieved at this level, the resolution of a grievance shall be pursued at each administrative level up to the level of the Dean or the appropriate administrative officer of the school or library in which the complaint arises.

 Academic Staff Grievance Procedure
The grievant shall file his or her grievance in writing, setting forth a statement of the decision that constitutes the subject matter of the grievance, all grounds on which it is being challenged, and all reasons why the grievant believes that the decision was improperly taken.
