Bands are making about the same as they made in the early '70s." Despite limited earnings with Gryphon, which formed as a classic rock band three years ago, Griffin says his solo acoustic route is much more profitable.
Griffin says the band is looking to record tracks for its first release, Electric Nightmares, in the coming months, with a release date tentatively set for early 2003.
Griffin describes the band formation in spring 1999 and the beginnings of his solo act in 1998 as sort of a rebirth after a 20-year professional music hiatus.

Griffin's career as a television talk show host was associated from the beginning with that of Johnny Carson, the reigning "king of late night talk" from the 1960s through the 1980s.
Griffin's first daytime talk show on NBC began the same day as Carson's reign on the Tonight show, and if Carson was consistently rated number one as national talk show host, Griffin was for significant periods of time clearly number two.
Griffin, who came to New York to sign a record contract with RCA in the early 1950s, was subject to a series of other influences.

Griffin was a member of what critics called "The Biting Brass" trumpet threesome in Goodman's orchestra, playing alongside Harry James and Ziggy Elman.
Griffin played with the orchestra from 1936 to 1939 and performed in the famous 1938 concert in Carnegie Hall.
Born in Binghamton, N.Y., on Oct. 31, 1915, Griffin learned to play the horn at age 12 and moved to New York City as a teen to become a musician.

Griffin soon joined a short-lived punk outfit called Death Wish, but in 1979 his musical taste took a turn to the sounds of the past, and he jumped ship to play guitar with a group called the Unclaimed, who specialized in '60s-style garage rock.
While Griffin's musical enthusiasms continued to be rooted in the 1960s, he began to nurture a passionate interest in folk-rock and country-rock, in particular the sounds of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers.
As the band began negotiations for a release from their contract, Tom Stevens left the group, and after several gigs with a replacement bassist, Stephen McCarthy also turned in his notice, leading Griffin and his bandmates to dissolve the Long Ryders in 1988.

Griffin did not sing lead vocals on most of Bread's singles — that slot was occupied by David Gates — but his harmony vocals and guitar work were crucial elements in the band's soft rock success.
Griffin wrote and sang lead on half of Bread's songs, his works were elbowed out by Gates' compositions when it came time to choose singles.
Griffin left the band in 1973 and rejoined in 1976 before the group disbanded in a swirl of rancor and lawsuits.

Griffin was born in Cincinnati on Aug. 10, 1943, and grew up in Memphis.
In 1991, Griffin, Richard Mainegra and Rick Yancey (the latter two from the group Cymarron) formed the Remingtons and signed to the newly established RCA sub-label, BNA Records.
Griffin is survived by his wife, Marti, daughter Alexis and son Jacob.
