Griffith Park is a large public park at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains.
Afterward Griffith was tried and convicted for shooting and severely wounding his wife [1]; when released from prison he attempted to fund the construction of an observatory, planetarium, and amphitheater in the park.
Griffith set up a trust fund for the improvements he envisioned, and after his death in 1919 the city began to build what Griffith had wanted.

In 1882, Griffith settled in Los Angeles, and purchased a 4,071 acre portion of the Rancho Los Feliz, which stretched northward from the northern boundaries of the Pueblo de Los Angeles.
Griffith died July 7, 1919, however, he had left a sizeable trust fund to complete the dreams he had for the park; specifically designating funds for the construction of a Greek amphitheater (the Greek Theatre, built 1930) and an observatory and hall of science (Griffith Observatory, built 1935.)
Griffith Park stands today a monument to the dedicated vision of one man--Griffith Jenkins Griffith, Park Commission, civic philanthropist, advocate of parklands, and fervent speaker of recreation for the health of Los Angeles.

Griffith Observatory and and Los Angeles Astronomical Society have enjoyed a working relationship together for many years.
On one Saturday out of the month, weather permitting, Griffith, the LAAS, and the Sidewalk Astronomers get together at the venerable observatory and position their telescopes on the grassy front lawn to give the public a view of the heavens.
The front of the observatory, as is the case for all the exterior, will only be given a facelift to restore it to its old splendor.

Col. Griffith J. Griffith (evidence suggests that the military title was self-bestowed) was a Welsh immigrant who taught himself mineralogy and geology and grew rich during the mining boom of the 1880s.
Griffith proposed that observatory visitors be transported to the 1,625 foot peak by a funicular railway, similar to Angel's Flight, which was carrying passengers up and down Bunker Hill near his South Main Street residence.
The observatory was placed down the hill, elevation 1135, high enough to see Catalina on a clear day but close enough to the city for visitors on the observatory's promenade to hear car horns honking on busy Los Feliz Boulevard below.
