he Griffith Observatory is unquestionably one of LA's icons, a domed Art Deco monument to science and a perennial favorite of Hollywood filmmakers, who have made its PWA Moderne silhouette know to most everyone.
Just after the turn of the century, Griffith offered $700,000 to the city to build the observatory and theater on the nearby parkland he had previously donated.
Although convicted of attempted murder, Griffith only spent a year in prison, and it wasn't until 1919, after his death, that LA finally took his money and later built the observatory and, later, an amphitheater, now known as the Greek Theatre.

Is the north end of the Park abutting Forest Lawn and Mt. Sinai cemeteries "heavily urbanized?" Is the eastern side of the Park, between the L.A. River wildlife corridor and the golf courses "heavily urbanized?" Obviously not.
But those who seek to commercialize the Park keep inventing ever more dubious reasons for hardscaping the Park-- heavily urbanizing it in the process.

Griffith Park Update – On March 30 the City of Los Angeles Griffith Park Resource Board held a meeting presenting the draft 25-year Griffith Park Master Plan.
However, the process has thus far failed to consider the needs and wants of the whole Los Angeles citizenry including central and east side residents who would like to ride local trails.
City officials, the Department of Recreation and Parks, the Griffith Parks Resource Board and the consultants, Melendrez Associates, continue to be swayed by a particular interest group, and do not appear to want to provide trail recreation opportunities to local bicyclists.

 Hiking in Griffith Park
It is here where I recognize that Griffith Park's open space, even more than its fine attractions, is what makes it unique among urban parks.
Although the trails are busiest during the summer, I enjoy hiking the most in the winter when the air is crisp, the views are endless and the trails are virtually empty.
Personal security is also an issue, but not nearly so much as people who don't hike in the park think it is. I've hiked about 7,500 miles in Griffith Park, over a third of it alone, and have had no problems.
