Mikheil, Prince of Abkhazia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Prince Mikheil, Mikheil (Michael) Sharvashidze (died 1866) was the head of state of the principality of Abkhazia and reigned from 1822 to 1864.
During the Crimean War of 1853-55, Abkhazia was invaded by Turkey, and Mikheil was forced to declare his loyalty to Turkey.
Though Mikheil was not the last of the Sharvashidze dynasty, the rule of Grigol III, his son, was short-lived and Russia subsequently abolished the principality in Abkhazia, incorporated it into Russia itself, and renamed it the Sukhumi District.

In 958, Bagrat II Regueni, "the Simple" (958-994) was crowned King of the Georgians and inherited Northern Tao (also known as Amier-Tao), while David III (961-1001) received a title of Kuropalates and got Southern Tao (also known as Imier-Tao) in possession.
The only setback was the 987-989 unsuccessful conflict with the Byzantine Empire that forced David to agree to cede his dominion to Emperor Basil II on his death.

On September 12, 1801, the abolition of the Kartli-Kakhetian Kingdom was confirmed by the Manifesto of Emperor Alexander I. In 1810 the King of Imereti was forced by the Russians to flee to Turkey, and Imereti came under Russian rule.

Politics was dominated by the repercussions of the loss of jurisdiction in October 1993 over the breakaway region of Abkhazia, for which the radical opposition held Parliament Chairman Eduard A. Shevardnadze responsible, calling repeatedly for a no-confidence vote and convening public demonstrations to demand his resignation, but without success.
The apparent inability of the Russian peacekeeping force stationed in Abkhazia to prevent reprisals against the Georgian population there in the early part of the year induced Georgian politicians to demand their withdrawal.
The mandate of the CIS peacekeepers deployed in Abkhazia was extended several times, but Shevardnadze's request that they be given police powers to protect ethnic Georgians wishing to return to their homes in Abkhazia--while agreed to by Abkhazia--was rejected by the commander of the forces.
