07.15.99 - UC Berkeley, LBNL mathematician awarded major international prize in applied mathematics
A professor in residence in mathematics at UC Berkeley and a researcher in the Computing Sciences/Mathematics Department at LBNL, Barenblatt, 72, is known for his analysis of problems dominated by complexity, such as turbulence, failure and cracks in solids, flow in porous and inhomogeneous media, and combustion.
Barenblatt, a student of the great Russian mathematician A. Kolmogorov, received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees (PhD 1953) in mechanics and mathematics from Moscow University, where he went on to obtain a DSc in 1957.
Barenblatt's principal colleague at UC Berkeley is Alexandre Chorin, a renowned professor of mathematics who also has an appointment at LBNL.

August, 2005, Science@Berkeley Lab: Lubricating the Wind
Grigory Barenblatt, who is also a researcher with Berkeley Lab holding a joint faculty appointment with UC Berkeley, Chorin, and Valeriy Prostokishin of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow, formerly a visiting Berkeley Lab researcher, describe their work in the June 25, 2005 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
Barenblatt, Chorin, and Prostokishin developed their flow model from the "sandwich model" of tropical cyclones proposed by Sir James Lighthill, one of the greatest applied mathematicians of our times.
Chorin and Barenblatt are both experts in the development of computational methods for studying the flow of fluids and solving problems involving turbulence, considered to be one of most difficult in all of applied mathematics.

ICIAM 99 in Edinburgh WWW Server - Congratulations to the prize winners
Grigory Barenblatt is one of the most distinguished Russian applied mathematicians.
Grigory Barenblatt has constructed a deep relation between nonlinear waves and general scaling arguments, and related the occurrence of anomalous exponents to the occurrence of waves whose speed depends on their internal structure.
The Barenblatt model of crack formation and the ``Barenblatt zone'' are among the most basic ideas in the theory of cracks; the Barenblatt correlations are the basic tools in the analysis of failure, especially failure due to fatigue.

Scaling, Self-similarity, and Intermediate Asymptotics : Dimensional Analysis and Intermediate Asymptotics (Cambridge ...
Barenblatt is a truly brilliant mathematician and an excellent educator as well, and provides deep insight about dimensional analysis, scaling, similarity, and intermediate asymptotics in this book.
Barenblatt's book, Scaling, self similarity and intermediate asymptotics, addresses the understanding of physical processes and the interpretation of calculations revealing these processes, two mental problems intertwined closely with the deeper more general issues raised by the recognition of patterns.
As a rule the special solutions of the selected problems represent the asymptotics of a larger class of general solutions, the value of the special solutions as asymptotics depending, of course, on their stability.

 [No title]
He and fellow UC Berkeley mathematics professor Grigory I. Barenblatt, also of LBNL, along with V. Prostokishin of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow, published their analysis of the effect of ocean spray in the Early Online Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The team began working on the problem after a colleague, Sir M. James Lighthill, suggested to Barenblatt at a party that drops in ocean spray might have a lubricating effect on hurricane winds.
Whereas Lighthill thought that evaporation of the droplets cooled the atmosphere and led to accelerated winds, Chorin, Barenblatt and Prostokishin have showed that more important is the reduction of turbulence by falling droplets.

Two mathematicians have constructed a new and simple mathematical model of turbulent shear flow.
The investigation by Grigory Barenblatt and Alexandre Chorin of the University of California, Berkeley, reveals a new general property of turbulent flow, showing how certain types of flow are invariant under a condition called incomplete similarity.
This theory shows that the role of friction in fully developed turbulence is different from what was previously thought.
