Grill (philately) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A grill on a postage stamp is an embossed pattern of small indentations intended to discourage postage stamp reuse.
Stamps so treated were distributed to post offices for testing in August 1867, and apparently satisfactory, as National received a contract stipulating use of grilling for all stamps.
The F grill on this 1867 stamp is visible as a grid pattern in the ink of the cancellation.

Postage stamps and postal history of the United States of America - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The stamps of the 1920s were dominated by the Series of 1922, the first new design of stamps to appear in a generation.
Stamp printing was switching from a flat plate press to a rotary press while these stamps were in use, and most come in two perforations as a result; 11 for flat plate, and 11x10.5 for rotary.
Although the stamps are today highly prized by collectors as masterpieces of the engraver's art, in 1930 the recent stock market crash meant that few were able to afford these stamps (the $4.55 value for the set represented a week's food allowance for a family of four).

 1867 Z Grill
Their appearance is quite ordinary, and the subtle difference between the Z Grill and its counterpart in size, the E Grill, could be easily missed—if one were not so aware of the value attached to the rarer of the two grills.
When grilling entered the contract phase on January 1, 1868, it most certainly was Charles F. Steel—the grill’s inventor and the National Bank Note Co. employee responsible for grilling—who chose the Z as the grill for the job.
The printer and Stamp Agent were located in New York City, a large post office, and many of the earliest known usages are postmarked at New York City, so the time between grilling a stamp and its actual use should be fairly narrow—ten days seems to be a sufficiently accurate benchmark.

PSE Summary of Stamp Grading Standards
When the stamp is immersed in lighter or watermark fluid there will be no dark line along the length of the bend and there may or may not be a slight white flashing as the fluid dries more quickly along the bend.
Change to a fl colored stamp with the inclusion in an inked portion of the design, or change the location to the back side of the paper so that it is not visible from the front, or change to a light colored inclusion and to a tiny size and the inclusion is no longer objectionable.
A stamp that has a large central thin, a 4mm closed tear and a stain in the upper left corner is seriously defective and would be considered as Damaged in the PSE Grading System.

To thwart that practice, a grilling process was applied to certain U.S. stamps between 1867 and 1871.
A grill is an embossed impression created by a miniature "waffle iron " that breaks the paper fibers of the stamp.
The use of grills was discontinued in 1871 when more permanent canceling inks were developed.

 1867-68 Grilled Issues
The first modification, from the all-over A Grill to the smaller C Grill, was a quick remedy to the problems caused when the grill weakened the paper, making perforation and separation almost impossible without damaging the stamps.
Grills produced from January 1868 on are considered regular-production grills, and the Stamp Agent records enable philatelists to determine how many of each denomination were delivered grilled during each quarter of the year.
Grilling played a significant role in National’s effort to keep the contract, and in the course of nineteen months the presence of embossing on 1861 Issue stamps created an extraordinary supply of scarce and fascinating material for collectors.

Secret Marks on the 15c Banknotes
This is a difficult stamp to separate based on the "secret" mark, mainly because it is thought by most that the secret mark was never used on this stamp.
Even a certified stamp, other than a grilled stamp which is of course always the National printing, is simply a stated opinion that the stamp in question is one or the other.
According to the noted color study of R. White, this stamp is usually a brighter and often darker orange than the Continental or American printings and is listed in his color encyclopedia with both orange and bright orange variations.

These stamps are usually sorted by color unless the presence or absence of the secret mark is obvious.
If the stamp is unused and has at least partial gum, it should be certified to ascertain the type, since the value of the stamp will in most cases far out weigh the cost of certification.
The National stamp is sometimes embossed with a grilling device to fake the scarcer "grilled" stamp, Scott 135.

The Type I stamp is by far the rarer of the two types with perhaps only 2% of all 10¢ 1861 stamps being Type I. Lester Brookman estimated that 500,000 of the Type I stamp were issued while 27,300,000 of the Type II stamp were issued.
Grills are produced by running the gummed and perforated sheets of stamps through a machine that produced a waffle-like pattern onto the stamps.
The 10¢ "Z" Grill is one of the rarest of all U.S. issued stamps with 6 single used copies known at this time.

I apply the adhesive substance to the upper half of the back of the stamp only, leaving the lower half of the back of the stamp bare, so that it will not adhere when wetted and applied to the letter or other mail-matter on which it is placed.
The object of this is to leave the upper half of the stamp remaining on the letter after the lower half of the stamp is torn off by the postmaster, instead of defacing the stamp with ink, as is now practiced.
C is the line of perforations across the middle of the stamp in the line of separation, to complete the tearing in a neat manner.

Machine-made wove stamp papers come in by the May 13, 1848 second printing of the 1847 issue if it was not used for the first printing in June 1847, as it may well have been.
That stamp paper used in 1852-3 shows ribbing, which was caused by a worn press blanket used during the printing and does not represent true ribbing or laid paper.
This was a process by which the stamp paper was soaked in an alkaline fluid which turned it brown, so that the application of acid on a small sponge attached to the thumb of the canceller would turn the stamp blue.

Based on the earliest known usages of the 2c D Grill (2/15/68) and 3c E Grill (2/12/68), it is our theory that the conversion from the D to E Grill took place only a day or so after sheets of 2c stamps were first run through the D-equipped machine.
The great rarity of 2c D Grills, relative to all other regular-production grills, bears out this theory.
