Articles - The Golden Oldies 3: LPs from yesteryear - Grimethorpe Special
Grimethorpe incidentally did not take part as Elgar Howarth was in the box with William Relton and Roy Newsome, but such was the furore that many conductors thought it “undesirable” and the following years saw the Open revert to “Epic Symphony”, “Diadem of Gold” and “Benvenuto Cellini”.
“Grimethorpe Aria” (1973) however is a totally different kettle of fish and remains one of the most important brass compositions of the post war period.
Howarth is of course a champion of Birtwistle’s music and one of the leading orchestral conductor of his works and the listener is rewarded with a performance that should have led to Birtwistle becoming as well known a brass band composer as say Robert Simpson, who’s works started to appear at around the same time.

The story of Grimethorpe has become one of legend since the bands original formation by members of the disbanded Cudworth Colliery Band in 1917, a story full of drama and success in the face of adversity unmatched by any other brass band in the world.
From their conception, Grimethorpe have been regular competitors in national and international competitions, more often than not taking first prize and never coming lower than 5th in their entire career.
The film took Grimethorpe on to international stardom and the band was inundated with invitations to appear all over the world.

Still brassed off: Mining village used in film reveals grim reality Independent, The (London) - Find Articles
Come 1.30 on a weekday afternoon in the colliery days, Grimethorpe Miners' Welfare Club would be alive with the sounds of the men who had just bathed and changed after the early shift.
The grim facts of commercial life here are that just 37 per cent of Grime- thorpe's adult population is economically active, the average household income is pounds 8,000 compared with a national average of pounds 20,000, nearly 46 per cent of locals are on housing benefit and 33 per cent are unemployed.
The Grimethorpe Regeneration Executive, based in the village's old National Coal Board offices, has been too busy trying to stem the flow of economically active adults to create the inevitable Brassed Offheritage trail, which might also include the band's rehearsal rooms.
